That's awesome! Yeah, he's pretty great, although he was never impressed by my reviews whenever he came to guest crit.
The styrofoam madness was an impromptu 48 hour project (independent from the transformers group - that section's work was such an enigma to me). Although we essentially vandalized Avery, it was my favorite assignment and it made its way into my portfolio, so I won't complain.
I'm also in at UCLA and waiting on Sci-Arc, but it appears that I won't be able to turn down GSAPP after all.
Thanks for your input I appreciate it. Sounds like they have an amazing program, and the more and more I look into it the more I become excited about it. I love the resources for digital fabrication, something that I am definitely interested in.
I have conflicting views on what I want to pursue in studio though. I like projects that are more practically based or form based, but Im not opposed to more theoretical based projects either.
I feel that Umich will provide a good variety as you've said. The other downside in my mind is the cost. I got some scholarship money but Im out-of-state so its still expensive.
wow great portfolios everyone. I am really glad I didnt find this thread until after I applied...I think I would have been way to intimidated. I spent about 4 months on mine...that includes production of projects and actual putting together the damn thing. I have no architecture, design or art experience so I was really starting from scratch...had to teach myself photoshop too.
I didnt realize how many people did the summer programs...wish that had been in the cards for me...
congrats everyone on ur acceptances! ok i need advice from u guys, i've applied to my list of schools through this graduate scholarship program, and included their e-mail and street address as the contact info for each application form. so basically i'm gonna be kept in the dark up till mid april, and at that one point i get notified of only one school (if i get accepted at all) .. ive been recently asked to list the schools in order of preference as my placement might not be my top choice, it all goes down to budget and where other nominees end up in the end. ok so my first two on the list are easy, gsd then yale, rest are, in no specific order, upenn rice and cornell, and i have no bloody idea what to list first. the three seem to be great programs with great reputations, but since i only have today to respond im seriously at a loss on what to choose before what. i'm an international so it's a hard decision since i'm not even in contact with people who went to either one of the 3, nor can i compare to my personal direction from the student work shown, nor relate to the faculty present now. i'd love to hear quick feedback on this, purely instinctive or advice from personal experience? my instinct says rice cornell then upenn for some reason (leaning towards randomness at this point!) though this would probably change in exactly 15 minutes. so need firm opinions pls!
thanks a lot!
that's my personal preference. it's all dependent on waaaaay too many variables. I mean, honestly, I'd have rice above yale and gsd. but, again, opinion. goodluck!
cool that was fast, thanks thevillian, yeah i'm leaning more towards rice these days, something fresh abt the program! upenn and cornell still not sure which comes first, cornell seems to be interesting but for some reason not many people seem to have applied to it here.
congrats l&c!

tangent here: do most of you figure out your designs through sketching and hand drawing or digitally? for example, i often find myself drawing in sketchup as a way of toying around with shapes and scales rather than sketching on a piece of paper.
i had some hand drawings in my portfolio, but a lot of my progression was digital and I felt kind of weird using digital images to show progression because they have such a "finished" quality to them. did anyone else have this problem?

no problem zoon..ask a direct question, get a direct answer!
I give the nod to upenn. despite the fact that I applied there, and they're 95% sure they're going to get it.. I find Cornell's lack of accreditation disturbing.
I usually figure out and work through my designs by sketching. A lot of times I work through the development with basic models as well from just fast concept models to more detailed ones.
I save the digital stuff till I have a better understanding of what I want my project to convey.
zoon, if you're not sure about the programs, choosing based on the cities is probably as valid; would you rather live in a sprawling Texan metropolis, a gritty northeastern city, or a snowy town in the middle of the woods?
I received a fed ex envelope today. It was in the mailbox, and on the other side of the transparent plastic window of the paper envelope was my name and address, so I knew this piece of mail belong to me. I could tell by the thinness of the envelope that there wasn't much inside. The 9" x 12" envelope must have some significance to it. It wasn't as if it was just a regular letter. So, I opened the fed ex envelope and there it was: a letter from the bank offering a special discount on a brand new credit card. I was not amused. The last school that I will hear from is GSD. If they don't offer me anything, I'll have to forget about the M.Arch degree; grin and bear it. And, after I hear from them, I'll know what to do next: either go to grad school or start driving cabs.
What I learned from this year so far:
The real kicker for Princeton was the writing sample. None of the other schools had this requirement. It was out of the blue; I wasn't privy to this requirement until a month before the deadline and I had to pull it out of hat. I didn't even think about applying to Princeton until October when they suggests I apply.
Don't apply to Ivies if you have a low GPA (my application was most likely hampered by my GPA and apparently in the low 2s) if you can't back it up with a stellar portfolio. I would suggest my portfolio is good, but not stellar (vis a vis Yunez's protfolio). My GRE's were above 600 on both V and Q meeting GSD guidelines.
My suggestion is to get everything in a month before the deadline. It will take days for your portfolio to arrive and it may take longer for them to receive your entire package. This might not apply, because I was rejected by Princeton promptly and I submitted my application late.
Yunez:
Your portfolio is stellar. It shows your understanding of space and your dexterity for geometric manipulation. I would say yours is by far one of the best examples, to my knowledge, of portfolio's to learn from.
Aguacate:
Congrats on your admissions!! I'm really happy for you--it shows that you made some headway in all those resume no replies in 2009. I don't think I could have to audacity or drive to get myself out of the disappointment this year.

Havent gotten anything from them yet...which has got to me rejection. God this sucks....oh well....
hw10, i'm pretty sure the MArch program at Princeton did not need a writing sample. That was only for the PhD program:

also, did you post your portfolio up here?
greg, is your portfolio link on this discussion? id really like to see it (but i really dont want to go through 28 pages to find it ;)

Things I received in the mail today:
A refurbished 1970's blue monogram print Gucci purse.
A belly dance jingling scarf.
A leotard (via fed-ex)
This Month's issue of National Geographic.
A parking violation notification.
No e-mails or calls from Tulane admissions (Today is the deadline, March 15, for them to notify all applicants).
No envelopes from anyone else.
This is very frustrating indeed.

It was in the application, so I pulled one out of the hat anyway. I started my application late so I didn't really read everything. My mistake. I included a writing sample anyway. I'm too ashamed to post my portfolio, having been rejected by a school that prompted me to apply and being canned in the first round twice.
so...GSD envelopes still haven't hit more than 2-3 ppl???
this is tight. bloody FedEx fucked around with my mail when i sent the portfolios too. hopefully won't give me gray hairs this time.
meh... keep posting
cheers
r
got my clemson letter today. I got into the Architecture + Health track which they apparently notified later.
so, no one else has heard from RISD aside from those lucky two or three with assistantship offers sunday night?
i really hope UW posts its results soon... [sigh]
congrats to those who are hearing about GSD and pratt! for those of you who haven't gotten the results you've wanted, keep your heads up. it's an incredibly competitive year: there are a lot of extremely talented individuals that have been overlooked by their favorite choices.
kap1720-
geez i know, risd and uw are slacking! lets get the show on the road!
In at Pratt with money! how can I leverage the money situation with gsapp? they offered me no scholarship/fellowship.
hw10,
i'm sure putting in a writing sample didn't hurt you. i actually was going to myself, freaking out to my friend "what the hell am i going to use for this!!" until he brought the same thing to my attention.
and never be ashamed of your work! ;)
kap1720,
a friend of mine got into RISD about 5 hours ago via phone call.
maybe thats what is taking so long? good luck!
nma214 that's a very clean portfolio. i feel like you'd be really well received by schools in the northwest. did you apply to any of those? good luck!
So did anyone that applied to UCLA receive notification of being waitlisted?
Rickos
I actually had something to use for it so I didn't question the writing sample portion. Thanks for the heads up and bringing it to my attention.
hmm, i guess i am hoping for a call from RISD then? i have laryngitis right now, so that could be an interesting conversation...
and stuzzzzie, tell me about it! i want to book a flight out to the northwest to check out oregon, but i want to find out about UW before i do... i'm not making that cross country trek twice for schools that are so close geographically (well relatively speaking).
