I start taking the exam in January, but I wanted to beging studying early.....
what study guides do people consider to be the most effective? Do people prefer the AIA guides, or one of the independent publications?

For the graphics parts, the guides written by the ARE people with examples of passing and failing solutions were very helpful for me. link

And as everyone says, just do what they ask you to do in the program and instructions.
No great designs necessary here! Just put the pieces in the right places.
ALS and Flashcards. I also recommend the Norman Dorff and David Thaddeus seminars. Check out your local AIA for info.
