It's that time of year....rental season!

WonderK

It's been raining cats and dogs here in LA for a few days now, and rather than do things that I'm "supposed" to do, like learn a new program or work on my portfolio, I was thinking that I'd much rather waste a bunch of time and catch up on my long-forgotten movie rentals. I mean, I'm certainly not going outside, and it beats staring at the rain and worrying about SoCal's looming fresh water woes.

So, as a compliment to the Winter Movie thread let's come up with suggestions for movie rentals for those nights we don't want to go out, shall we? I'm starting off with the entire series of Planet Earth, and then from there I'd like to become a connoisseur of zombie flicks and watch Dawn of the Dead. Also I think I need to rewatch Troy and The Italian Job.

Any other recommendations....?

Oooh, how was Volver?

The Pianist was so good, but so depressing.

I was going to watch Grizzly Man on Animal Planet and then my free cable disappeared. Bollocks.

The new Die Hard was ridiculous, not nearly as cool as "regular cop" John McClain being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but still awesome.

And some of it was filmed at that Morphosis designed high school in Pomona, humorously enough, the interior shots at the complex (which are a set) look like a level from Halo...

Dawn of the Dead is an awesome movie.

Watch The Mighty Ducks too, another great zombie movie.

grizzly man is haunting, the footage is very beautiful. i thought volver was good. i watch too many depressing movies, but feel good movies generally annoy me.

Oooh, good call kyle, that last Die Hard actually got pretty good reviews, for a Bruce Willis movie anyway.

For those of you who may have missed it (about 2 years ago, maybe?), Inside Man with Clive Owen and Denzel Washington was quite good. The characters were a little strange but the story was original.

if you want to become a true connoisseur of zombie flicks beyond george romero, there is the italian great lucio fulci. his masterpiece is called "the beyond." it's in many ways a beautiful film that will scare you silly. not for everybody though.

A good documentary/comedy I recently saw was Radiant City. It's a Canadian film and I had to rent it at a Blockbuster north of the border, but maybe Netflix has it south of the 49th.

It follows a typical suburban family showing their day to day routines of life in suburbia. Has your typical documentary style statistics and academic experts throughout. But also comes with a surprise ending. Also enough aerial photos of developer driven suburbia and gridlocked traffic to make you sick. Less waste of time than watching another Die Hard moview IMO.

you can't watch lock stock without following it with Snatch. That would be my recommendation...BP ticker accent is brilliant!!

Grizzly Man is good, but sad. I wasn't crazy about it, I actually thought it was a bit exploitative.

The Grizzly Project, on the other hand, is the polar opposite film: enchanting, optimistic, hilarious.

I loved the most recent Die Hard, as a brainless afternoon's fun, and likewise Casino Royale was fun and dumb (and, yeah, Daniel Craig's bod is featured pretty frequently).

Speaking of men, since I know you like Ewan MacGregor: Long Way Round is amazing! Tracks Ewan and his buddy Charley as they ride motorcycles around the globe. A must see that will make you want to travel to remote locations.

i recently watched A History of Violence, by Director David Cronenburg. i liked it very much. Eastern Promises, also by Cronenburg, is near the top of my queue. if anyone wants to be 'friends' on netflix send me an email. i'm new to this phenomenon...

also watched Thirteen Conversations About One Thing a few weeks ago. highly recommended.

this weekend we had a bunch of friends over and watched Stripes. that movie never gets old.

Much to my wife's chagrin, I took over her Netflix queue last summer to rewatch some old faves I hadn't seen in awhile. Close Encounters ..., First and Second Batman, Fist Full of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More. And now that Rowan is here, we have almost no time to watch movies!

"Me and You and Everyone We Know" was indeed a strange one. I would say I neither liked nor disliked it. Rather, I feel neutral about it.

mdler, at least Harry Potter was a good movie, right? That sucks though!

Speaking of sucking, and Pirates, I was forced to watch "Pirates of the Caribbean 3" last week. It was so bizarre. It went from being normal to what I deemed were segments of 60's French existentialism. Through it all though, Johnny Depp is still a genius.

Yesterday I watched "Paris, Je t'aime" which is an ode to Paris with I think 16 mini-movies, each produced by a different director, and each focusing on a different arrondisement in the city. It was really lovely and with a film like that with so many different styles and themes, there's something for everyone. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elijah Wood, Emily Mortimer and many others make cameos. I recommend it.

no, i abhor harry potter. it's not literature, and the movies are kinda mediocre. my s.o. loves the books and hates the movies since they are poorly condensed...
