i used to LOVE flags when i was young, about the same time that i was collecting stamps.
a few faves:
seychelles: just because everything else is so orthogonal/45d/rigid.
nauru: signifying its position just below equator. kind of a neat approach.
japan: all time most powerful graphic, imo.
greenland: also pretty powerful, though w/more nuance.
i have to admit that i've always thought that both the british and us flags are kind of ugly. not that they're not effective means of communication and perfectly legitimate design solutions, i just don't find them graphically/aesthetically pleasing.
Cause of it's almost medieval qualities, and cause it's a bit fascinating how big a difference those four perifial crosses does for the flag's aesthetics. Compare to the (dull) English flag.
not bad for a "country" (or 'micronation') that is nothing more than a couple of steel platforms in the north sea, with a population of 27, and a size of 550 m2 (smaller than some McMansions).
...And not at all because it's the flag of RedNeck Former Slave Owners, it's just nice looking and I liked the Dukes of Hazzard as a Little Kid (TV Show):

I love the Chicago flag, partly because of the graphic and partly because of what it means: each of the stars represents a great (or terrible) event in the city's history, and the positioning and bars represent important geographical features. Here's a really cool little graphic illustration if anyone's curious. What I love about this flag design is that it takes into account the possibility of change and mutation as the city goes through history--for example, there's been a lot of talk at the civic govt level about adding a star to the flag if the city gets the Olympics! How cool is that...
I also love the Arizona flag, as bossman put up there (the one that looks like a star in the setting desert sun) and the California flag, because I like the fact that, like Alaska's flag, it features an element of nature that the state is so very proud of.
Country flags are mostly boring because they don't reach that level of specificity in their references. I like the Union Jack graphically, guess I'm the only one... I love all the airine graphics for pacific island nations with flowers and birds--it's a total shame none of that carried into their flags! Here are some examples:
Singapore
Philippines
Thailand
Wouldn't it be great if flags weren't such an abstract graphic excercise but actually showed more of the unique features of each country?
what's your favorite flag?
purely as a designed object, leaving out nationalistic feelings
mine is the Greek flag

Geogia (the country - not the state)

how do you even come up with this topic? i think the flags we have need a more diverse color palette. and why so much red?
I think the South Carolina flag is beautiful:
And, the Danish flag is just wonderful, simple, and elegant ... and looks great when seen everywhere:
cool topic, several of these i had never seen before!
red=?
what could red possibly signify?
easy answer, definitely the swiss flag...
For US state flags-I the Texas flag is the best one. But i'm slightly biased-but even if i wasnt from there, i think I still find it striking.
I always thought the Albanian flag was pretty cool:
2 of my favs have already been posted: Seychelles and Bavaria
here's the commonwealth flag:

I've always liked the simplicity of the Swedish flag
The alaskan flag is kind of cool too.

sorry, that didn't work.
Oops. Add a forward slash before the second "img". It will "close out" your code.
try this.
these are selective:
chile
not as good as the Texas flag - proportions all wrong.
estonia
quite good colour selection
germany
these colours still work well, and have a strong presence.
indonesia
poland
must be great when these two get together for bi-lateral negotiations.
monaco
can you sue for copyright on a national flag?
isle if man
really, nothing else like it.
latvia
great colour and proportions.
qatar
although this works well.
morocco
maybe the best of all - the colours just vibrate.
nepal
has to be the most distinctive for shape.
vietnam
much better than China.
Two favorites:
Swiss + Japanese
I mean in all honesty is there any type of flag that has a stronger sense of symbolism, not to mention be more recognizable worldwide.
sealand
not bad for a "country" (or 'micronation') that is nothing more than a couple of steel platforms in the north sea, with a population of 27, and a size of 550 m2 (smaller than some McMansions).
red is a power color. i like these flags:
quebec
evanc whose flag is that? that's the best one.

i like the flag itself, but you should be careful waving that thing around.
I like the Arizona flag, which bossman helpfully already posted.
grid - what flag is the first flag that you posted? (the multi-colored vertical). Me likesy.
n_, i beilieve that's OMA's proposal for the EU...
postal got it right. good job.
Well, it is my favorite. I'm just saying.

city of amsterdam...
corporate states of america...
While I will always love my beloved California flag...the Oregon Flag is pretty cool as it's two sided...
And I believe the Swiss flag is in fact square.
Front
Back
I also like BOTH of the Scottish flags...
