thats a good idea, it would be cool to do segments on the different stages of building a model, and the different uses of a model. One could be on conceptual modeling, details (wall sections, roof and glazing systems). I've seen some excellent models with incorporated text, or section models. it would be cool just to go over individual materials, and their different uses, such as plexi-glass or corrugated cardboard, or plaster bases etc.
i think the movies would be good if they had a very specific themes, good luck, and be sure to post them when you're done
Yeah, dude. I wish there would have been something like that out there when I was learning how to build models. You should definitely do something about gluing plexi to wood/chipboard without fogging it. And teach those kids about the wonders of methylene chloride. I love that stuff. I'm always amazed by how late in the game most people at my school find out about methylene chloride.
You could show ways of making and assembling identical objects so that they actually end up identical:
You could show how to score and snap medium-weight transparent material.
You could show how to cut wood and other materials square and straight.
You could show turning print-outs of elevations into quick models.
You could show two or more ways of cutting Foam core to make tight and pretty corners.
You could show as many ways as you have, to make foliage and trees.
cant really explain tooo much of the field simply because i dont want to run myself out of a job.... but then again the publicity might get me some work...
I can't wait to see the comment(s) for that clip...a bit esoteric for the porntube generation...perhaps Archinect should have it's own mediablog.
I would definitely post one from my weekly meetings - it's a hoot.
haha. I had a buddy of mine build for Studio 1 that included macaroni, food coloring, and micro machines. He also put an RC motor on it so that it would rotate. He didn't know how to put a regulator on the motor, so it wall all or nothing. Before his presentation started a guest juror asked him, "What's the suicide rate on this building?"
freshman year a few friends had to make a nagative space model of a project...well,,,,, they did it out of rice krispies and made treats...hhahaha.....
I've been talking about "my book" for years, any time something good would happen in the shop or I'd come up with a miracle fix for some problem. "That'll be in chapter six," I'd say.
I'll never do it -- so please do it for both of us. Knock em dead.
Yeah. I know I've got a ton more to learn about modeling, but God, that first little hump was a bitch to get over.
Are you just going to do a short series of videos, or will this be a long running project? It could be a cool weekly or monthly segment. You could get it syndicated with all the school newsletters. Syndication = advertising $$$.
i'm serioulsy thinking about segments..... like short 10 minute clips or somthing....then in a full video due them in chapters..... i have a nice high end minidv camcorder that will work great........just have to have the video editted to where it wouldnt be boring....i have a film guy in chicago that could help me with the full length video....but maybe the short clips would be a jump start....
have a nice sound track/etc...... make it interesting......
Have you seen "The Woodwright's Shop" (I think it's called) ? It's hilarious. The poor fellow's so earnest and intense -- he's actually bled on-camera. Constantly fumbling with a spokeshave or dropping the drawer out of a borrowed antique table in his rush to show the dovetails. . .
so i think i might start shooting next week..... and maybe have some clips for the next semester for the college people.....
any more ideas floating around that you should think i should touch base on
considering that i have to separate the professional model building side from the college level side...i have to keep in mind that not all the schools have a nice shop to work in or is accessable all the time.....
model building clips?
i was thinking about making a tutorial of model building tactics and dropping them on utube.....
maybe go over the basics for college model building...i.e. chipboard/glues/basswood/etc.....
any suggestions...
gonna try to get a list together and maybe do a few individual videos instead of just a long one

show how to glue your fingers together and how to roast marshmellows with a hotglue gun.
...using hotglue as an alternative to getting stitches when you cut your hand with an Xacto...

Video Segment #1
Scene 1:
-Ask students to buy basswood.
-They scurry off.
Scene 2:
-Students return from store with balsa wood.
-Inadequately beat the students with the weak, foamy wood.

That's beautiful. . .
