BoSox/Patriots/Celtics = coming of the Rapture

obelix

I am starting to sell all my possessions and am preparing for the day when the Chosen will be called home. The current convergence of kickassness that is New England sports, combined with the debacle of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, herald the End Times.

As Saint Papi of Fenway said, "This isn't hot sauce... this is Boston Red Sos."

Possessed by the rapture

I like the pats, even if they have become the evil empire of the NFL. They play football right, and thats how they can lose guys like Ty Law and continue to bring the pain each year.

Oct 23, 07 12:04 am  ·

well...the didn't resign ty law, lawyer milloy, willie mcginest, etc.
etc. because they want to have good players across the roster than
in just a few key positions. they do pay young players and
superstars.

and we've already talked about how the 'evil empire' moniker is misplaced.
they're not the yankees of the nfl...all the teams play by the same rules

apurimac.
yeah. they've been good...they were actually also in the superbowl
in 1996 as well...so they've been in it something like four times
in the last decade. and they really should've been in it last year
if one or two plays had gone their way at the end of the game.
i feel bad that it makes the rest of y'all miserable that they're
this good...but on the other hand it's fun for me to watch.

sdr.
you know they're in the world series right?

and beta...
you really are right...i listen to boston radio every day on the
internet...and boston fans really can never be happy...they were
complaining about the sox all season even though they finished
with the best record in baseball...somehow they were never really
that good and their manager sucked. one of the reasons i
decided to leave that city of misery.

Oct 23, 07 9:44 am  ·
 ·
lletdownl

its really not just a boston thing...

no fans are ever happy with their teams even when they are playing well.

in 2005 the white sox won 99 games in the regular season, yet Sox fans were jumping off buildings at the end of the season when we let Cleveland back in it. Then most sox fans figured boston would beat us (then we swept them... ) most sox fans then thought the angels would beat us (we then pitched back, to back, to back, to back complete games... no typo there) and finally in the WS we had quiet confidence... but it wasn't until the final out of game 4 that we felt happy.

we then got angry again a few months later when they traded Aaron Rowand. so... you never know...

and remember last year? Bears rolling to the NFC championship but the headlines in the papers every week were about benching Rex Grossman (which they probably should have done seeing how much more consistent griese is now playing...)

Oct 23, 07 9:53 am  ·

lletdownl

and though i hate to admit it... Patriots really are a great franchise... the NFL's hard salary cap means every team has the same amount of money to win with, the same means to sign players and recruit free agents... its a testament to their front office that they have maintained such success.

biggest BS in sports though... Bill Bellicheck. NOT AT ALL a good coach. Shit... i could win with the talent they have had over the year. He is a louse... watching his press conferences makes my skin crawl, really just a pathetic guy... Any FOOTBALL coach who approaches the game like its WW 2 has his priorities seriously out of whack... probably my least coach in all of sports... next to Pat Riley.

Oct 23, 07 9:57 am  ·

larslarson

lletdownl
you're completely wrong on bill belichick...his press conferences do
suck...but he has definitely not won with the best talent out there.

pats vs rams? cmon. pats vs panthers? maybe...pats vs eagles?
maybe again...but they've also had to beat the manning, harrison,
and james colts several times..they had to beat the juggernaut
that was the steelers back in the day (cordell stewart led nonetheless,
but that team was something like 14-2)...just look at the receiving
core that the pats have had over the years...or the fact that they
won a superbowl with several no name running backs...you have to
give some credit where credit is due.

i listen to him talk on his weekly coaches show where he goes more
into depth about his thought process and such and the guy is a
genius. his players also talk about some of the things he prepares
for and the guy seems to think of everything.

i mean just look at some of the things he does that no other coach
had done before and are now copying. he's also one of the reasons
they've drafted so well...and his teams have continued to do well
after losing coaches like weiss and crennel...if he wasn't a good
coach he would've been exposed when they lost those two.

anyway...he's really creative and people will be studying his
defensive schemes someday. just my opinion.

Oct 23, 07 10:12 am  ·
 ·
lletdownl

thats fine you can think that, i disagree and think hes a d bag

any man who has the best team in football and is so arrogant as to cheat the same way he has for years, against coaches who know he cheats in that way, looses a ton of respect in my book.

Oct 23, 07 10:30 am  ·
 ·
larslarson

on the whole 'cheating' thing...
you're allowed to do it from the booth...you're not allowed to
do it on the field...the rule changed last year and is somewhat
ambiguous if you look at it.

how do you gain any kind of competitive advantage again?

every team does it...maybe not on the field..but they do it.
the whole thing was much ado about nothing imo..other than giving
every team that's lost to them an excuse for why they lost.

of course if this current team wins the superbowl i guess there
will be no more excuses?

Oct 23, 07 10:37 am  ·
 ·
larslarson

ok i guess the rule actually says:
"no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." They also say all video for coaching purposes must be shot from locations "enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

so he did indeed break the rule by doing it on the field.

but other coaches have admitted to stealing signals...so the only
thing they have a problem with is videotaping right?..and for this
the pats and belichik's career is forever tainted?

Oct 23, 07 10:49 am  ·
 ·
lletdownl

how is it not cheating?
the reason it is not allowed is because everyone can take aerial shots to see formations before, at, and after snaps. If you have video tape that shows the signals, that can be very easily coordinated with the aerial images... all you have to do is watch the coordinator and your chances of knowing the defensive scheme is greatly increased. you could know if a blitz was coming, or not. Corner blitz? safety crashing for a run blitz so audible out? etc etc it has infinite applications. The fact you dont see that is only because you are a patriots fan. Everyone else in the nation understands.
And if everyone else is doing it why is no one else getting caught with libraries filled with illegally procured tapes? The colts have been good a long time, dallas, chicago, chargers, seattle... they have had success the past several years... where are their videos?

Lars -- much escapes this ex-chowder-head. I'll be the one cheering from behind this door. . .

Oct 23, 07 10:56 am  ·
 ·
larslarson

ok..
but how does it actually effect the game?
are you saying all of this is processed between plays?

you would also know that the headset to the qb is turned
off before defensive signals are given..right? so there
is no way for the coaching staff to talk to the qb after the
d gets its signals...maybe they have an elaborate set of
hand gestures? and you also know that there are typically
three sets of signals...the real signal and two dummy
signals. i can't imagine that the pats would be able to
figure this out between plays...they don't watch the
video during the game do they? you're not allowed to
show video on the sidelines...but maybe they just haven't
gotten caught yet.

belichik and his coaches used to guess what play the
offense was going to run before they ran it when he was
with the giants...and by their formations and such he was
right more often than not. they were actually disappointed
when they didn't guess right. there are only so many
formations and so many plays...i would imagine that it has
alot more to do with preparation than with having someone
videotaping signals..but that's just my guess. and you take
away the video camera and stealing signals is legal.

i'll agree that it's arrogant for belichik to have continued doing this...
but i'll also say that it's equally as arrogant for the rest of
the country to think that brady needs any help to read a
defense and make adjustments...

now if they can prove that audio signals have been interfered
with at foxboro then i can start to agree that the pats are in
the wrong...and i start to lose some respect.

but i think that a lot of teams have just been beaten by a
better team that's been better coached...and i understand that
i have a problem being completely unbiased.

Oct 23, 07 11:16 am  ·
 ·
larslarson

and i believe the rule was read as saying that you couldn't
videotape to use it during the game...it said nothing about
using it for a future game...so it wasn't really illegal in belichik's
mind...and i don't know that the nfl could really argue that
he was wrong to have those videotapes...other than that they
were shot from the sideline, but belichik could argue that he
thought it was ok to videotape for future games because of
how the rule was written.

Oct 23, 07 11:26 am  ·

belichik is an awesome coach. those early new england teams clearly didn't have the talent and they still managed to win super bowls. remember that first super bowl was with an unproven, second year tom brady filling in for the injured drew bledsoe.

and this business about cheating is ridiculous. everybody in sports cheats. that's just part of the games. anytime somebody actually gets busted for it (whether belichik, most of this steroids bs, etc) it usually has much more to do with politics (that most of us will never know the full story about) than any kind sports honor or ethics or whatever it's called.

#1 there was no "cheating" done - whatsoever.

the pats violated a policy that stated no recording devises to be allowed on the field.

the commissioner himself verified that the information obtained in no way effected the game in play on that day

and lets get one thing straight - the coaches upstairs in the booth are allowed to record and focus in with binoc on the other team - this is 100% allowed and EVERY team does it - and anyone who thinks that watching the other teams coordinators from the booth upstairs vs. watching them from the sideline is different is naive.

I personally believe that he voilated this policy to draw attention to the flawed system... there is no sane reason on why he would need to do it, so you have to think of alternate motives - maybe he was fed up with other teams watching him + coord. from their booths, to get an edge on him, copying his plays, etc while he spend double the time preparing....

I will say that we will really find out after this season, if this brings around a new NFL policy...

it is people who do not completely understand the rules, policies and processes of the game and only hear of things second hand that makes these things get blown out of proportion.

and lars - it has already been verified by the commis. that there was no audio interference - case closed

and for the pats critics in general - lets not forget the many many years of dissappointment, only obtaining a handful of wins, having shitty players and going nowhere and how the organization turned it around... I was there then, watching every game and it was great - call me a chowder-head, but at least i am not a pinkhat

is bill arrogant - yes

is he also the hardest working coach in football - yes

Man-gina better look out on Dec. 16th, there will be no mercy

and the Colts will fall on the 4th - but at least that will be a decent game to watch. do you think we can get the pats and colts to play 4 times a season?

if anyone is at the game this sunday - stop by section 140 and join me for a drink!

wow you guys are all completely jaded...

the 'everyone cheats' excuse does not fly at all... and the idea that belicheck cheated to expose a flawed system... like hes some benevolent man just trying to make the world right is BEYOND ridiculous.

He cheated...

thats why they lost the draft pick,
thats why they were given the largest fine in NFL history

It hurts the NFL big time to label one of its most popular franchises with such a slanderous tag, and to levy such big fines... so the fact that they made such drastic punishment out of this whole thing COMPLETELY PROVES to most rational people that the patriots were cheating in a way detrimental to the game.

Arguing on bias about this does little good, this is just an outsiders perspective, which is likely more subjective

i was really young when they beat the pats that year so i dont remember it... really wish i did... but i wore out the super bowl highlights beta tape we had... literally to the point that it wouldnt play anymore

as for the rockies... they are on ridiculous fire, but they have also had 9 days off. Plus when it comes down to it... being Hot against the NL really doesnt mean as much as youd think... they are so inferior talent wise that i really dont see them even competing. Im going boston in 5 but i wouldnt be at all suprised if they sweep.

ok..last thing.

i only said that everyone steals signals...it's not cheating.

but you also have to admit that goddell said there was
nothing else worthy of a fine on any other tape...maybe
disingenuous..but he's also the one giving the fine.

and he's been far more strict than any other commish..
so the largest fine is kind of expected right? so more
of an example making fine than it actually making your
case of it being such a huge infraction, most likely.

in any case you could maybe make an argument about this
year...because the more stringent memo came out this year..
but it's pretty hard to argue that they can be labeled as a
cheater for every single year belichik has been there imo.

i'm probably as 'subjective' as you though lletdownl

Well I wouldn't say it's a sign of the end of the ENTIRE world. But this may be a rapturous year for Boston/ New England sports fan. It might be a little too early to start talking about the Celtics though. And the Bruins suck but who still cares about the NHL?

I've been listening to sports radio a bit more the past couple weeks, and it is funny when they ask Belichick and Brady about the Sox, and Schilling and Tito about the Pats.

holy shit, i just realized that the red sox came back & defeated the indians. that's a surprise. rockies will get smoked though. they may have been hot...but so was detroit last year before they had to sit on their asses for a week. for a veteran team, the week off might be good for rest but with upstarts like detroit or colorado having that much time to hear everyone tell you how great you are is just setting up for a beat-down. red socks will probably win in about 5 games.

celtics & bruins suck. but the patriots, belichik & brady rule! go pats!

haha ok lars i was about to jump all over you for proclaiming the celts winning the east cause thats not gonna happen this year.

Until the celts add some depth and a point guard they are, in my opinion, the 3rd or 4th best team in the east. One of those big 3 will get hurt at some point... and if that happens they have no help. Plus how are a bunch of aging allstars going to be able to play an 82 game season, plus playoffs and compete against teams like cleveland and chicago who can run them ragged with their youth and depth.

ps... clearly im not the only one who thinks bellicheck is evil

they should win the atlantic though... they are like the new nets, but with slightly younger players... though jason kidd had an incredible year last year... he could do it again and make it tough.

they actually do have some depth beyond the main three...
posey, tony allen, rondo.

but the celts really aren't that old...garnett has no injury history
and pierce didn't have any til last year...ray allen would be my
guess..but i think this can now compete with any other team in
the east...even chicago and cleveland...

btw...talk about a lack of depth..do you really think lebron can
repeat the miracle he did last year? maybe chicago has some
depth, but cleveland has a shorter bench than boston...and
are they really a running team?

Oct 24, 07 10:09 am  ·

"Through prior years of postseason frustration, they never
complained or pointed the finger outside their team."

that one statement alone invalidates that whole 'argument'.
the colts have constantly complained to the rules committee
after every previous years losses.

whatever...espn is so vapid, overhyping machine right now that
trying to find anything valid in what they say is a useless
excercise.

Oct 24, 07 10:13 am  ·

larslarson

there are so many inaccuracies in that article it's pathetic.

1. the pats 'constantly complaining'...what is he talking about?

2. pats running up the score on dallas...wade phillips called the
timeout when the pats had the ball on the ten or so..he doesn't
call the timeout the clock doesn't stop...maybe the pats don't
score. he also fails to mention that the pats had the fourth
string running back in the game...how bout miami stops the run?

3. why are the pats angry and runnin up the score? maybe
because they want to prove that the videotaping had nothing
to do with whether or not the won...that they can run over
teams at will? since every journalist and their mother is
claiming they wouldn't have won without those videos.

4. let's just conveniently overlook every time payton manning
was on the field and throwing with the score already out of
hand...cause they're good.

5. let's just overlook every time manning has thrown his
teammates under the bus after a loss...cause he's good.

Oct 24, 07 10:21 am  ·

lletdownl

cleveland is definitely a running team and will be even more so this year.
your right though, that was a bad example... detroit has more depth, but cleveland is pretty short this year.

the problem with the celtics is that posey, tony allen and rondo are not good players... im sorry... but all james posey does is get older and through his mouth guard at officials, or cross check people (as he did while the bulls destroyed the heat last year). Rondo hasn't proven he can play consistently well, let alone start PG for a team with that many big name players... same for tony allen... hes never been a starter and was only mildly effective off the bench. And the NBA seems to be all about depth these days... more teams run, the season is tougher as more teams become competitive... i just dont think they have enough

I think the celtics have a few years to get it though... garnet allen and pierce likely have 3 years of productive time together... more than enough to trade for some role players, draft a guy and make 1 more mid level FA pick up.

Bulls will win the east this year because they have exactly what the celtics lack. Youth and legs across the team, energy, and tons of quality depth

to be a professional team..don't blame the other team for
scoring..blame yourself for not stopping them.
