Architects Smoking Marijuana: Grown and Sexy? Immature and Repulsive?

dia

For the record - I am not a straight edger - I didn't even know what that was until a few months ago and I certainly dont associates with it. All of my friends and associates were/are well entrenched into a range of different substances and practices.

depending on who you work for you may be asked to pee in a cup. certain companies require all subcontractors(this includes architect geniuses) who enter their property to be drug free. cigarettes and scotch whiskey exempted of course...

And also, I have been known to have imbibe alcoholic substances - most of my comments relate to the other drugs, of which I have never been a consumer. Except caffiene.

Mind altering substances only seem to have one of two effects upon me. They are somnolent at best, emetic at worst. Never anything fun. Alcohol has had the unique ability to provide both sensations at different times. I am designed for a mostly teetoataling lifestyle whether I like it or not.

i smoke quite a bit. i have cut down since school (thesis semester = 1/4 pound) now about 1/4 oz a month. i never have used smoking as a design tool . . . LSD on the other hand has worked as a design tool for me, but rarely do i get into that. Apurimac - sex on acid is definately an interesting experience...

Ha ha, we just received the following email from our boss:

"To the smokers:

Jana and I just battled a raging fire in the ash pot by the back door. The plastic hand shovel is now liquid. Please be more careful with your burning death sticks. I don’t want our building to end up as black and crispy as your lungs."

LOL

OK so I learned the straight dope (no pun intended) today in a seminar on practicing architecture: In my state, possession of marijuana, hash, meth, cocaine, or even the paraphernalia used in the use of these drugs is sufficient cause to have your license revoked.

So is drunk driving, failure to pay child support, tax evasion, and larceny.

Also, "maintaining a common nuisance" can cause you to lose your license, which I think is reason enough for me to refuse to let my husband start the little backyard pig-raising project he mentioned wanting to do yeah!!

oh the disparity.

dead beat dad, drunk, larcenist, stoner.

which one of these things is not like the other?

funny [sad] to think that smoking a joint could make you loose your license. Not to jump the stereotype of jamaicans and there casual smoking, but I could have fields of it and still retain my architectural registration. Viva la revolution

Waaaaaiiit so LB, let's say you're really into... beading, a relaxing craft hobby.

And if someone finds you with a large stash of tiny plastic ziploc bags - FOR THE BEADS!!! - you could be out of a license?

OH NO!!!

Someone better tell grandmarchitect.

Hey All.

Thanks for all of the responses. I really appreciate everyone’s point of view.

To give you a little perspective, up until shortly after I graduated university I was very involved in the straight-edge scene. Back then drugs and alcohol were black and white issues. Part of why I am struggling as much as I am with this issue is that although I do smoke grass and drink alcohol I have not been able to completely shake some of my thoughts from before. Trying to define what is use and what is abuse has been very difficult for me because instead of black and white now there are a million shades of gray.

Another part of why I am struggling with this issue is dealing with coworkers. I usually wind up keeping co-workers at arms length, especially because I am unsure of how smoking pot might be viewed by employers. If I have a party it is very rare that I invite coworkers because I don't want the subject of smoking a joint coming up in the workplace. This might be one of those come on moments, “what goes on outside the office stays outside the office type things”. But far too many times I have heard talk about a long night out drinking and partying. Personally I think all of that talk should stay outside the office. If you can’t think of something else to talk about get back to that sheet of stair-detail redlines you have sitting on your desk.

I hadn’t thought before of how this might affect my license. Does anybody know how pot or paraphernalia is looked at by the California Architects Board?

i would hope the cali architects board would have a very liberal policy. If they don't, then what the hell happened to that state?

I've never heard of the CAB doing such a thing, and the practice act doesn't address it explicitly the way they do in Talaiban controlled Indiana.

In CA, the CAB is permitted to revoke a license if the licensee commits ANY crime (felony or misdemeanor) that is "substantially related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of the business or profession for which the license was issued."

But whatever... come and take it, I say. I don't make a dollar more for being licensed, and without weed, we never would have had Archigram or Ant Farm. What kind of world would that be?

@ Abel-Oner-Office:
that picture brings a pleasantly horrible taste to my mouth. never occured to me to pump CAD after eating shrooms... i will try!! :D

please leave the bowl in the reception area of your office, hopefully i will spot it while making the rounds of post-graduation job interviews.

@ original poster of this thread:
whatever dude. relax. it's okay. sobriety and inebriation are both art forms, absolute answers are not available. find your own unique livable balance.

Though i agree with people trying to find their "own unique livable balance", I'd say calling sobriety and inebriation "art forms" pretty much pisses in the cornflakes of anyone actively engaged in the effort of making legitimate art.

I don't think so. I think riding a bike in the snow with a cup of coffee in one hand is an art form, or balancing 6 plates full of food in a crowded room, or telling someone how you really feel while keeping a smile on your face. They may be science, too.

I seriously doubt Mission St. meant to demean oil painting or sculpture (accepted as legitimate?) by finding 'art' in the everyday. Or maybe it's a semantic thing, like 'information architect.'

nothing wrong with pot and drugs in general as long as it stays recreational. eating too much, drinking in excess, not exercising etc is probably way worse than smoking pot. Dont listen to people who tell you that it's wrong to smoke dope, they're probably the same who think that getting laid and wearing condoms is the work of the devil or god knows what other BS. now pass me that bong please.

yeah, liberty bell... what FRO said.... i meant "art form" in the most personal sense of uh... the art of making your own unique life. that can be quite 'beautiful' too.
there's such a tremendous amount of energy that's been invested in the idea of "sobriety vs intoxicated". you're either straight edge or a broken shambles of a human being (in many peoples thinking). the reality is so much more diverse than that.
anyhoo, what is legitimate art? you're up to almost 4000 comments on archintect... i would say posting here is maybe your art form. (no piss, and no cornflakes implied). :D

You are a grown ass man, you should know better!

-_-

Getting high to relax, socialize, unwind

Drinking beer/liquor to relax, take the edge, socialize, unwind....

There are few differences there, but context is important....

You can waste your days getting at a bar or sports events

or you can get high, literally anywhere you want....

so you decide!!! Do not let anyone else here influence you. You can waste your time smoking weed at home, or actually doing something useful with that High like read a book or sketch, exchange intellectual thoughts with one another, or get drunk and spill your sorrows, tell your truths to random people, socialize, go see a fucking football game. This is shit you should know man...

I worked at firms, studios, and starchitecture offices. It seems there's a correlation between smoking and doing good work because a lot of people in studios and starchitecture offices smoke...
