Does anyone know who installed and supplied the mesh grille for the museum shop for the De Young? I know Herzog and de Meuron designed the building, but I don't know who they used for their security grille.
really, this took less than a minute. went to the arch record with the de young on the cover and opened to the 'sources' blurb which is part of each feature. i'm billed out at $100/hr. you owe me $2.
portfolio on the left of the site, scroll down to de young. 30 seconds. $2 + $1 = $3.
"Project: de Young Museum
Architect: Herzog and de Muron
Location: San Francisco, CA
Metals: Copper
Finishes: Natural
Surface: MetaBUMPâ„¢ and MetaPERFâ„¢
Zahner System Utilized: Inverted Seamâ„¢ rainscreen walls and Inverted Seamâ„¢ roof, Zahner Surface Algorithm(ZSAâ„¢)
Zahner designed, engineered, fabricated and installed custom exterior copper cladding, roof, and the custom exterior glazing system.
The custom bumped and perforated pattern on the facade was generated from a series of digital images of tree canopies. Each bump and perforated hole is derived from an algorithm created to map contrasting image tones of the original images.
There are approximately 1.5 million bumps and over 1.7 million perforations on the exterior panels. There are over 7,600 unique panels on the main building and tower.
Over 1 million pounds of copper were used. The copper has been left untreated to allow for natural patina development.
A custom structural glazing system was developed and fabricated out of steel pipe and channel, which was intregrated smoothly into the building facade.
The main building has an exterior copper cladding surface area of 129,900 square feet of copper cladding. The copper roof has a surface area of 80,000 square feet. The tower is clad with 33, 218 square feet of copper."
thanks dammson- you're right. I'm talking about something else. While I like the copper work, I'm specifically interested in the security grille ( the "curtain" that keeps thiefs out when the museum shop is closed). Thanks, I'll look into fong and chan...
I have several of the punches sitting on my desk...two years of sitting inside and they're a boring brown color. if i remember correctly i think that they were going to sell them at the museum, does anyone know if they ended up doing so?

Thanks. I looked at the website and don't see Security Grilles or the de Young project. Maybe it was a special project?

amb is talking about something else...not the copper...and strictly in the museum shop...

today's copper price is $3.2752/lb - so that cladding is worth over $3.3m. Don't tell the scavengers or bottlepickers!

Otherwise known as Adobe Photoshop color halftone
