Everyone please, please please go to http://design.fossil.com and rate the tin by 'rationalist' as a 10. It wouldn't hurt to rate some other people's as 1's, either....
What this is: you know when you buy a fossil watch, it comes in a cool little tin? Well, they're having a design contest for the tins, and the top four or five will actually get produced! This would be an awesome piece to have in my portfolio, so please help me out. I know they make you register, but they honestly haven't spammed me at all since I did this, so it shouldn't be too bad. The top 30 rated designs with AT LEAST TEN VOTES move on to the judging round by fossil's actual designers. So I just need you guys to get me into that round to have a chance at this.
My design: based on car pinstriping. I know it's hard to see with fossil's crummy website animations (I can hardly ever see the full designs), but I've got a cream and orange pinstripe pattern with a large 'ghosted' (grey) pattern behind it(this is the bit that doesn't show up well in that little thumbnail), which drapes down onto one side, and a smaller pinstripe design that goes on the front corner of the tin, all on a flat black background (think hotrods). Hopefully at least of few of you will get the animation to work so you can see this, but if not, just vote me a '10' anyway and I'll post a picture of the real thing when it gets produced!!!
Go to http://design.fossil.com
Then register so you can vote, activate your registration. Then go back to http://design.fossil.com Then click 'Gallery'. My design should be at or near the top if you click 'Sort by Newest'. Then rate my design a 10!
Thank you for your help with this.... I want that produced tin in my portfolio SOOOOO bad, you wouldn't believe it! I've always loved fossil's stuff (tins, tags, actual merchandise, everything), so it would be a dream for me. I'm trying not to hope for first place too badly (a trip to their design studios is part of it), and just want to get in the top four so that my design will get used.
Why do I see only a metal box with no design on it?
I scrolled thru the gallery, clicked on the thumbnail by rationalist, once the pop up window is fully loaded, I just see a plain metal box.
Java is installed.
It happens with any boxes I click on.
What's wrong?
This is because fossil has launched what is arguably the most crap-tastic website ever coded since the dawn of the web. I used to be able to see them occasionally, but now I never can. I've tried everything, so I really don't know what to tell anyone else, except that the public voting doesn't actually qualify me to win anything more than a fossil watch (which is nice and all, but it not the point). After that, then fossil's design team evaluate the designs themselves and choose the ones to get produced (the most important of the prizes). So if you vote blindly, rest assured that it won't be produced if they think it's crap.
I'll make some bigger .jpgs to load up here tonight or tomorrow so that people can see the flat version. Or maybe I'll take a shot at hacking that tin image and plastering my stuff on it.
the website worked fine for me... voted a 10 for you... i think that your design is definitely one of the best, probably the best... did you notice that you can sort by the current rankings? your coming in at #2 right now...
I think that might be what 5th place is for... the top four get produced, plus other stuff (decreasing amounts of gift certificates + the top person gets a tour of their studio), but the fifth place person just gets a $100 fossil certificate, and their tin doesn't get produced. So I bet the fifth place person is going to be a design they really like and looks really good, but they don't want to produce because of copywrite or production issues.
Thank you to everyone who's helped so far! I wish there was a vote counter or something, I have no idea whether I've met the minimum or not.
I'd love to help support a fellow Archinecter, but that damn Fossil site isn't letting me create a login. I've tried 3 times now, and I've gotten no email to confirm my login. Damn Fossil and damn Frank Gehry!
That site sucks, I can't see it anymore on my portable, and even when i was in, I couldn't see the animation, but it works fine from my workstation at the office.
Does the site let me vote infinitive times or I should delete my cookies or even create a new account just for the purpose to help an Archinecter?
It definitely doesn't let you vote multiple times, it stores the votes with your username and lets you change them.
The only above-the-board way I can think of for you to help more would be to rate some of the crappier designs that are somehow in the top thirty (remember, thirty move on to the next round) as 1's.
yay! Yesterday I dropped down to *gasp* #57. It was terribly depressing, but when I look at some of the designs that are doing well... it's obvious that this bit is a popularity contest. Not saying all of them are bad, there are definitely some in there that I really like, but there is at least an equal amount of utter crap.
I wasn't able to register until I used my work address. My 2 hotmail accounts didn't work. I checked my junkmail and everything. I have another work accound and a school account, so assuming they both work, rationalist will get a couple more 10s!!!
I know, the fact is though that with people voting others designs as '1's, the higher you are the more vulnerable you are. So I'm waiting until the end of the voting period to enlist the second wave of help. That way I swing up at the end and it's too late for people to do anything about it.
OK, it's the LAST DAY of the contest- please archinecters, help me out! I was doing well in the beginning, but I've been sandbagged down all the way into the 80's.... I just need top thirty. Multiple email addresses, voting other people 1's, I don't care if you don't care, because it's apparent that everyone else is using these strategies.

rationalist, your tin looks very cool, of course I love the car culture reference what witht he hotrod in my garage.
How long do we have to vote? I'd rather do it from my own computer than my husband's which I'm still on until Thursday.
Tins can be rated until November 3rd.

good luck...
wonder if the Eames foundation is going to get pissed at Fossil for the LCM tin?

Voted. Looks great, rationalist. My grandpa was a sign maker who also did pinstripping by hand. The good ol' days.
Hey- I got the animation to work once, so I screenshot it. Soo... here it is:
i like the design, simple, clean, elegant. i voted for you. the site does suck though, it hates firefox i thinks.
voted (a 10) good luck or should I say: break a leg
ACK! I've dropped to #17! Help me, archinect! And there are some truly dreadful things in the top ten...
hey you're back up to #7!
I'd love to help support a fellow Archinecter, but that damn Fossil site isn't letting me create a login. I've tried 3 times now, and I've gotten no email to confirm my login. Damn Fossil and damn Frank Gehry!
bump.
If you have a choice between email addresses, use the shorter one- some people have told me they're email address was too long to be accepted.

#21 today.

this thing will NOT let me register. argh.

I think Chili's become my new favorite archinecter.... = )
Rationalist, you've fallen into the 40s! I'm afraid I've helped all that I can. It may be time to enlist some new help!

that's the ebay strategy...
