Oh the horror! OSU is ranked above USC in the AP polls!
For the first time since 1998 OSU is ranked 1st in the AP pole. How am I to live this down. I have a former intern who is a big OSU alum and I will have to live with USC ranked 6th. It is the first time in three years that they aren't ranked #1.
Ha. We'll see about that. All those guys we had out with injuries last year that made our defense weak are back, and looking awesome. It'll be good to see a shut-down defense again, and it won't be OSU's...
ND could easily be 1-3 after their first 4 games against GT, Michigan, Joe Pa, and MSU. Michigan should be pleased if they escape the season at 7-4. And USC has too many holes this year to be truly great, but with a weak schedule they should still be able to muster a BCS berth.
what is this nonsense about michigan being good this year? Do you guys even watch college football? AT BEST they might finish the year number 2 in the big 10 behind OSU...Go Bucks!
I will be at the ND vs GT game in Atlanta and am cofident the Jackets will win. put that in your pipe and smoke it!
...and that will conclude my sports commetary/trash talk for the next 2 years. my grad schooling starts tomorrow!
go buckeyes! i thought about flying home to columbus for the big game saturday... columbus is crazy when there's nothing on the line and for the first time they are #1 and #2...
sorry usc people, but i hope the football gods usher in rutgers to play ohio state. either way its gonna be a slaughtering!
'tis all right silverlake. With the amount of people we lost from last year, and losing a game, we'll be happy to get to the Rose Bowl. USC-Michigan in another classic matchup, hopefully with similar result to the last time we met in 2003. = )
I wouldn't mind sending Rutgers to go get smashed by tOSU, as I don't have much love for the BCS, and that will only put us closer to ditching it.
How do we know that the BCS game won't just be a repeat of the Big 10 Championship game? I think if it's a close game, and OSU and UofM are clearly the best 2 teams in the nation, why not have a rematch?
Chili- because it being a close game doesn't mean that they are the two best teams, just that they, on that day, were evenly matched. Some other team (probably USC or Arkansas if anyone) could concievably roll over either of those teams, but we won't know that if they rematch two teams who have already played each other.
It could, but it's very unlikely given a) the fact that Mich/OSU is such a late season game, so voters will likely sandbag the loser's ranking specifically to avoid this, and b) the fact that the computer rankings are liking USC's Strength of Schedule so much this year. If USC wins out, they will play the winner, unless Rutgers completely stomps WVU causing pollsters to vault them to the #2 spot (unlikely). Arkansas would probably never leap over USC in the polls given the 50-14 loss to them in their home opener.
I was watching the u of I game this weekend and the football commissioner for the big ten commented on the OSU MU rematch chances. He responded “negligible.â€
I am torn. Go to a USC BCS game or USC at the Rose Bowl. It is rather cold here in Waukegan come January!
Also, did any one catch this on ESPN last weekend? USC could (4) peat!
Bad replay feed allowed questionable TD at Rose Bowl
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Replay officials at last season's Rose Bowl were unable to properly review a Texas touchdown that should have been overturned because the wrong television feed was plugged into a monitor.
Big Ten and national coordinator of officials David Parry told The Associated Press that he went to the replay booth during January's Rose Bowl between USC and Texas to ask about Selvin Young's 12-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. It appeared on replays that Young received a pitch from Texas' Vince Young after the quarterback's knee touched the ground.
Parry said replay officials told him one of the TV feeds they were receiving while trying to review the play had shots of fans in the stands. They did not see a shot from the camera angle that definitively showed the wrong call was made on the field until it was too late.
The problem was fixed after that play. Texas went on to win the game 41-38 and the national championship.
The story first was reported Friday by Yahoo.com.
The assistant replay official from the Rose Bowl, Dick Honig, told Yahoo.com that the feed problem might have affected the review of an earlier play involving Reggie Bush losing a fumble while trying to lateral the ball.
Bush had gotten deep into Texas territory with a screen pass when he tried to toss the ball to a teammate.
Parry said after viewing the play several times in very slow motion, it appeared Bush's pitch went slightly forward, which would have been an illegal forward pass, resulting in a dead ball and a penalty on USC.
Instead, the lateral was ruled sideways, and Texas was able to recover the fumble.
Parry said he doesn't believe officials on the field or in the replay booth made an egregious mistake, just a difficult judgment call.
"It was a very close call, and they did not have indisputable evidence to overturn it," he said.

They would have gotten that touchdown in another play or two anyway, if it had been correctly called back. HOWEVER... just a thought, it would have taken longer, and they may not have had time for their last-second touchdown at the end, had that been the case. Interesting.
I have always been much more upset about them calling our fumble recovery an incomplete. The Texas reciever had the ball and was flat-out STRIPPED, but they called it an incomplete pass. Bullshit.
Agh. Let's drop this avenue of discussion, it still gets me too riled up.
if it's any consolation...we got beat by unranked kansas state last week and will be lucky to win the big 12 championship...whereas USC is still alive in terms of maybe playing for the national championship again.
dsc- It's so alive and well that I have not yet recovered my voice from the SC/Oregon game last saturday! One of my little luxuries in life is my season ticket, and usually going to at least one away game a year.
"ND could easily be 1-3 after their first 4 games against GT, Michigan, Joe Pa, and MSU. Michigan should be pleased if they escape the season at 7-4. And USC has too many holes this year to be truly great, but with a weak schedule they should still be able to muster a BCS berth."
43N88W- Totally busted. But before you lash me for my shit prognostication, keep in mind that my bookie has beaten you to it, and I am a Michigan State fan, which is punishment enough. And given my track record, no U of M fan will be disappointed to hear me pick OSU to beat Michigan by two touchdowns.
In other news:
If I could have one wish this Holiday season, it is for Wisconsin AND Boise State to jump Notre Dame in the BCS after they lose to USC. Who's with me?
My dad just sent me an invite to the annual up the Irish part on campus before the game. He is still holding my game ticket for me, I just don't think i can make it this year, bummer.

Oh, and did I mention how much the pre-season polls suck? Give it a few weeks, and then we'll see how everybody's doing.
The ESPN gods have their forecast..
Through the end of rivalry week they have USC 2 and OSU is off the map. Yeah Trojans!
Dsc, when did you graduate?
1992. Thesis was extended one day for the Rodney King Riots.
and no I am not kidding.
We wound up presenting thesis after graduation ceremonies. Still a fan of the architecture program.
Still try and make football games when I can. Made it to the Rose Bowl last year.

Go Wolverines!

I can't stand college football but I do know that between this whole BCS thing and the elections, this is one interesting year to be in Ohio....

My dad co-oped my alumni tickets and sits at row 1 at the 10 yard line. Last year DS got to hi five the entire band and Traveler!.
I am not going to make it out to LA this year. boo hoo.
My dad is also part of the USC Associates. They have that pre-party in the fenced in area to the north of Bovard.
That is one way cool party if you ever can get in. Free food and booze.

yeah, huh? Weak schedule, indeed! Nebraska and Arkansas didn't turn out too bad. Stanford's sure weighing us down, though.
found out last night that I wont be driving the South Pasadena Rose Bowl Float
43N88W, noted.
They're gonna have to play a hell of a lot better than they did against Ball St. for that to happen!
CAL will beat USC on saturday (sorry rationalist)
UF will win out,
