Going to NYC for a couple of days to watch some baseball. (Go White Sox!) Anywho, looking for stuff to do... Any recommendations? Good bars? Any tips on what to see?
Time and sobriety will be thin, so leave the touristy crap out!
well, you can do me a favor and go see the zaha exhibit at the guggenheim. take lots of illicit pictures of email them to the poor student you can't afford to even drive out of town.
the prada store is a must if you have never seen it before, and really easy to get to. also the issey miyake store has an interesting interior:
plus, it's new york. i think just walking down the streets alone provide scores of interesting things to do and see
looks like i'll be there soon too, but for business, so i'll be busy during the days so i'm looking for things in the evening/night. more recommendations please.
1) Walk around Chinatown in the evening. What an incredible urban experience. The streets are like something straight from Blade Runner. Have some roast duck while you're in the neighborhood.
2) Walk around SoHo, Tribeca, and the village sometime late at night... It's generally safe, and you'll feel like you're in an Edward Hopper painting.
3) Staten Island Ferry across the harbor and back. Great way to see the harbor, and it's free.
4) Check out the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 113th and Amsterdam. Largest gothic cathedral in the world, and it's still only about two-thirds complete. (Unfortunately, some areas may be closed off due to ongoing restoration work from a major fire the cathedral suffered in 2001.) Better yet, attend an Evensong service if you're there on a Sunday and have a penchant for Anglican liturgy. The choir is superb.
5) Times Square at night. True, it's an overpriced tourist ghetto, but it's worth visiting at least once. Better yet, go there at 4 AM when the streets are mostly deserted, but all the billboards and signs are still lit up full-blast. It's surreal.
6) Coney Island on a summer night. It's a long subway ride from Manhattan, but worth it.

And don't forget to check out the Egyptian tomb at the Met, it should be free to get in on Friday nights.
