Manamana, I think that you’re missing my point. I don’t really care if it’s trendy or not trendy or if it’s breaking some mold or if you have never heard of the band- my statement is that most indie rock fails to illicit an emotive response at 99% of the indie rock shows that I have been to. The bands that I mentioned, beck, the white stripes, VHS or Beta, etc. were able to transcend the shoegazer boundary and actually get the people to respond to the music- rock music that you give a damn. From my point of view memorable shows. (Disclaimer: I have never seen Interpol live, they are probably not very good, but they get me going through my headphones…)
The question is who is at fault here- the audience or the band? Its not all about the audience. I have seen both situations. I saw Yo La Tengo (does it get any more indie godfather than Yo La Tengo?) play a free outdoor concert a few years back. About 3000 people turned out, it was a beautiful summer night, not too hot, everyone was seemingly in a good mood. Of course not everyone there “knew†Yo La Tengo’s music, maybe they owned an album, maybe they just heard of them and were there with friends- not everyone there was a “loyal†fan- that understood the inner workings of Matador records and the twee Hoboken scene. In a nutshell, Yo La Tengo sucked and they were a-holes to top it off. They could not deal with the fact that everyone there was not a loyal fan and they said so- why they agreed to play to a free outdoor concert- I have no idea. Towards the end of the show, the band actually imploded on stage, refusing to finish off two of their songs and went into some ultra ironic “jokey†political spoken word b.s. That 3,000 people came to see the show specifically to see them and have a good time- they could care less- they completely missed the opportunity to gain a new listener, make someone appreciate them in a new light, or simply try to set the place on fire. All they seemed to care about was scurrying back to some small 100 person venue where they could surround themselves with their most loyal fans that would laugh at all of their inside jokes- that way they would not be seen as “selling outâ€. Who do they think that they are- Bertolt Brecht? I don’t think that I have listened to Yo La Tengo since. I am glad that they have not “sold out†and are keeping it real at 100 person venues. I bring up the Yo La Tengo example as a prototypical example of a band’s attitude at an Inde Rock show…
But o.k. we are talking about CD’s here not live shows…
My husband just told me what indie meant, he says it just means "independent". Oh. I was thinking it was native sounding new rock with drums and people dancing while wearing beads and long loose brown clothing or something.
Being an indie music junkie for over six years - I did feel a bit isolated and close-minded when it comes to music. It's really quite boring actually and a lot of times depressing. I now do have a guilty pleasure of listening to christian music - hymns specifically. =X
current cd obsessions

Jason,
Great running into this morning! You're right, the imagines Alf selected are hideous. I hope he changes it back.
thanks man! good to see you too.
I don't really know what indie is and I don't care.
