Back in college, some friends of mine were in this joke metal-rap band. They were all left-handed, so they called themselves Southpaw. They also recorded one song, called "Down With Rightie".

I don't even like metal, but Slayer by a long shot. I met Kerry King on a video shoot. Dude's 4'6" - both tall AND wide. Crazy.

I also like Slayer because Tom Arrayo (sp?) is catholic, yet he writes all this satanic metal. He acknowledges the discrepancy/hypocrisy with a smile, and explains that the satanic stuff sells, so why not? I love it.

I am going to also stand up for Megadeath a little and say I love Countdown to Extinction.

I have never listened to Slayer much.

But Sabbath rules the world.

Mastodon gets high marks for their album/concept art. I find their album mixes a little too treble-y, however.

In college, I played in a funk/ska band that covered Sabbath's Electric Funeral.

Nice. I too played in a band in highschool that played only Sabbath, Nirvana, and Metallica. And ! had long pink hair.

Well, if you judge that metric based on potential "VH1: Behind The Music" fodder, then Mötley Crüe wins hands down.

On a side note: when I moved to LA in 1999, on my second day there, I went to the Ralph's on 3rd and La Brea to buy a six pack of beer and a frozen pizza. I went to the express line, and there, in front of me, was Leif Garrett buying a baked chicken.
