I've officially hit a new low waiting for news from MIT, UPenn & Harvard. I'm staying late at the office, just so I don't have to go home a face yet another empty mail slot devoid of any acceptance &/or rejection letters.
To know or not to know . . . that is the question.
I got the email from ASU regarding its Planning program too a little while ago; what's more odd is that i didn't apply at all to ASU for any of its programs. I think somehow they got a hold of people's emails (I don't even recall going to their web site, let alone requesting info). I wouldn't read into it.
Has anyone heard anything about UPenn? I called at lunch today and they said that they weren't mailing anything out until next week -- at least for the MLA programs.
so, since I'm waiting for toshiko i have some kaons to ponder
who does she call? why them not me?
did all of the acceptances get sent out? if not why not mine?
i thought rejections were sent out first?
if i come up with answers by sitting silently and thinking about these questions, i'll let you know.
Has anyone ever received a voicemail acceptance? I am not answering any calls until May. I'm afraid that I might get a call from a Dean and have no clue who it is...
"Hello, strugs?"
"Yo."
"This is Mark."
"Mark!! What's up, bro? Man, I was so wasted last weekend, sorry I spilled that syrup all over your girlfriend's purse. I just really needed to get some Aunt Jemina on my waffles."
"Excuse me?"
"Yeah, you probably don't remember that...especially after you shotgunned your second Mich Ultra. Seriously, dude, who shotguns Mich Ultra? That is like snorting an Atkins bar."
"Uhh..you must have mistaken me for someone else..."
"This is Mark Jenkins, right?"
"Wigley"
"What is?"
"Mark Wigley."
"Why, you got the delirium tremens...a little shakey shakey?"
"Uhh...nevermind. Goodbye."
"Later man, see you at 10 cent wings."
i applied to the GSD regular track MArch I, not AP.
Toshiko called me at 8:32 PM on 3/14/06. She called from a 617 phone number that came up on caller ID as such, and asked me to call the same number back.
When I called back today, she answered the phone directly, said congratulations several times, told me when the open houses were (one in cambridge, one at her office in NYC with many GSD alums scheduled to attend) and told me that the official paper notification package, including financial aid info, would be mailed Friday.
For those of us who have not heard back from GSD, call Toshiko:
"Prof. Mori, I received your message earlier today - I'm thrilled to hear the wonderful news! Thank you so much for telling me, and I definitely will be attending your open house..."
i wish i had applied to an ivy other than Columbia, the wait is killing me. how are all the typical comments about low GREs, GPAs, etc. not really affecting admittance weighing in on those of you accepted into GSD, Yale. etc
my gre score was definitely the weakest component in my application, can some of you share scores if accepted to the schools i mentioned.
I just want to know where I stand with the stupid test.
thanks.
I wouldn't worry about the GRE. I know that Yale will accept scores in the range of 1000<x<1100 (not me). I can't see it mattering much at any school.
What I'm concerned about is the essay. Having worked on my portfolio in bits over the past year, there wasn't much left to be done come application time. But I sure spent A LOT of time on my essay.
Upenn are pretty stubborn it would seem....called the other day and someone said that the decisions are made, buuuuutt they are not mailing anything out until 4/1.
To whick I replied..."is that a joke?"
To which she replied..."sir, I assure you, it is no joke."
UCLA will notify via e-mail in a week or so.
WonderK...kentucky represents a place I can live cheaply until school, where I can detoxify my brain from the undue amount of stress that I have endured lately resulting from not knowing my grad school fate.
aka. a buddy of mine bought a house in Lousiville and said I can live with him virtually rent free for a few months. It's not NYC, but in my eyes, there is increasingly something to be said for that. Long story.
mn--every single admissions committee member, and person who's talked to an admissions committee member, that I'VE encountered has said the order of importance for applications materials in architecture goes like this:
1. portfolio
2. statement of purpose
3. recommendations
4. grades
5. spelling correctness on application form
6. GREs
OK, so nobody actually said #5, but they all emphasized that GRE's were by far the least important part of an application, and the portfolio was by far the most important. Some schools don't even require a GRE score. I wouldn't be surprised if spelling "architecture" wrong everywhere on your app counted against you more than having a 3-digit combined GRE score, all other things being equal.
This can be considered both good news and bad news, because if you don't get in anywhere then that means your problem lies well beyond the GREs. But it does mean you can stop worrying about standardized test scores. A low GRE score can easily be trumped by quality in another part of the application, but the reverse is never true.
Also, polling people who already got in about their GRE scores will be misleading. You may find that most people accepted to, say, the GSD have high GRE scores, but correlation doesn't equal causation. They probably could just as easily have gotten in if their GRE scores were 200 points lower but everything else was the same.
i think of those 3 i'm liking princeton the best although i'm trying to suspend judgement until i go to the open houses. If i get into MIT i think it will be a tough decision between there and princton. i think mostly because both of those programs are much different than my undergrad education at UVA. princeton because i'm really into some of the work of the professors there like liz diller, paul lewis, etc. etc, and i'd love to teach one day. MIT because its crazy and it's notion of what architecture is seems so big, and it has so many interesting people do such wildly different things. and its a huge maze.
remedios: I am also choosing between GSD, Princeton and Yale . . . but i'm curious as to your preferential treatment towards Princeton. Are you not concerned that the class size, being so small, might actually have a negative affect? In addition, what are your feelings towards Yale? and the GSD? Have you viewed student work from all three schools, and is that something (the overall quality of the work) you consider to be very important in terms of your decision making process?
Hey remedios and ones11, once you two make your decisions, could I borrow any of the other two acceptance letters? -- whichever of the two you decide against, it doesn't really matter...I just want to see what the letters look like...
...Oh, and one more thing...could I also see a photocopy of your passport or driver's license? ..I may also need any financial aid info and housing assignment letters...
...oh, and if your portfolios were REALLY good, I may need a letter from your doctor explaining that you had a partial stroke and lost some mental function including depth perception and the ability to draw accurately anything one sees in real life...
The GSD is an awesome school, but...no one I've talked to puts the GSD on the same level as Yale and Princeton. Those two are consistently considered the top two, and Harvard is just slightly below.
I'm curious what the financial offers were from Princeton for Remedios/Ones11?
OHIO STATE_is there anyone out there with information or seeking housing opportunities who will be attending osu grad school? i haven't officially taken my acceptance there, but it is a front runner and i'm just trying to get an idea of potential housing situations.
I'm curious how people did on the analytical writing part of the GRE. Anyone else wish it didn't involve writing? Why can't it be "pick the next cube in the series?" That would be so much better! I hate writing!
galford: i am 97% sure i will be going to princeton, largely because their financial aid is unkillable. (also possibly because i am a stan allen and gandelsonas obsessive, but shhhh). the total on-paper cost looks similar to in-state tuition at places like UVA, although its hard to say what non-tuition/boarding expenses will come be... that could probably be its own thread.
accepted to grad schools yet?
true salparadi....
but she does have an office in nyc. she's a busy woman, who knows where she is while making these calls.
maybe she'll start sending text messages.
u r in @ gsd.
to which you should reply:
omg! toshiko!!1 kthxbai!!!11
Congrats remedios, +q!

Does any one knows if Toshiko calls international students too ?

Toshiko Haiku
call from toshiko
will my cell phone ever ring
i am losing hope
I think the GSD only accepts a handful to MArch I AP - so I guess it makes sense for Toshiko to call those people...
congrats +q and jualn! that's great news!
as for me, I'm still waiting...
arg.
-to
hmm... GSD calender shows a faculty meeting and department heads meeting for today (the 15th)...
"Wigley."
"What is?"
I wish I had applied there, just for the slim chance of getting to use that line.
anybody get in to syracuse or penn?
to ease the mind - or cause more anxiety:

good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!
I love that she asked you to call her back at the same number...
After all, you can't accumulate a $27,000,000,000 endowment if your long distance bills are through the roof...
In case you are curious, RISD mailed yesterday. They are also giving decisions over the phone. Best of luck to all.
strugs, hilarious. best post of this thread so far.
uh the fustration; still no words from yale.
+q congratulations! way to go!
strugs, no word from RISD here.
Anyone heard from Pratt?
jualn-
i guess it eases the mind- but makes me feel not very special (even though my mommy keeps telling me).
-to
i heard from RISD last week, accepted plus $5,000 and a TA
anyone heard from upenn yet?
anyone heard from upenn (MArch) yet?
any landscape peeps around?

what about MIT...any news?
ok so, i've gotten in to the GSD, princeton, and yale, and i had a combined GRE score of (cough) 1100.
yeah.
dblefere,
if you get in you will hear from them much earlier than 4/1.
remedios
Just out of curiosity, do you have a preference among those three, and if so, briefly, why? (and congrats!)
i think of those 3 i'm liking princeton the best although i'm trying to suspend judgement until i go to the open houses. accepted to RISD M.Arch today.

she doesn't call everyone though, right?
mn (and anyone else that may be interested),
GRE: 1220
GPA: 3.9 (out of 4), arch and non-arch
I had pretty good recommendations by heavily published architects i have worked directly with, and know me well.
I also submitted some research I have done in Cuba along with my portoflio.
Graduated: UF School of Architecture with a Bachelor of Design (BDes)
okay yale rejected me. my gre score was nowhere near +q`s score. if that`s the way all univs are gonna look at me, then ???
congrats +q. i`ve seen your portfolio before, very nice stuff you got.
I'm curious how people did on the analytical writing part of the GRE. Anyone else wish it didn't involve writing? Why can't it be "pick the next cube in the series?" That would be so much better! I hate writing!
i got a 5.5, but 1170 on the rest. i hate that test.
got a 4.5 and 1100, studied while working 60 hour work week... (took away a lot of time I would have rather spent working on my portfolio... oh well)
4.5, 1170.
also a passionate gre hater.
galford: i am 97% sure i will be going to princeton, largely because their financial aid is unkillable. I wouldn't be worrying about the GRE, I don't think it matters much.
I got a 1300 combined math and verbal, and 5.5 writing and was rejected by Yale.
4.5, 1280, rejected from yale and princeton....i dont think these things matter much.
i hate the gre's b/c they made me feel like i got a lot stupider since the sats.... ie the damage i did to my brain in college outweighed the good
rejected by risd.
ouch.
still waiting for that first acceptance. waitlisted at my top choice and waiting on 3 more...
