Haven't been there but I understand Metalliferous is a good place if you are looking for metal pieces.

I'll second Blick, occasionally they have chipboard in a really nice gray-brown color. Also there's a Michael's Arts & Crafts that opened last winter at 97th and Columbus that has those mini sheets of plywood and veneer for far cheaper than anywhere else I've seen in the city.
