6-Month Sustainable Living Internship

In-depth immersion
The Pun Pun Internship is an opportunity for 4 responsible, self-motivated, hard-working, community-minded individuals to gain in-depth experience in communal living, organic gardening, seed-saving, natural building, and other sustainable living techniques. Interns will be active members of the community and demonstration center, including taking part in the day-to-day responsibilities, participating in meetings, touring visitors, assisting workshops, as well as developing your own projects. Included in the internship are both the 2-Week International Sustainable Living & Earthen Building Workshop in December and the 2-Month Asian Activist Training from February to April.

Intern curriculum
You will be immersed in the vast fields of sustainable living, natural building, organic gardening, self-care, and community living. Your time with us will include both group and individual learning. You can expect some guidance and instruction, side-by-side experiential working, self-initiated independent projects, and your assistance in some of these areas during events based on your interest and experience. Listed below are topics and techniques that are included. Be open to changes and additions.

Organic gardening
You will be given instruction and opportunities to experience and experiment with your own garden plot. You will also be guided in:
Making and using Indigenous Micro-Organisms (IMOs)
Composting
Garden bed-building
Companion planting
Harvesting
-Seed collection and saving


Natural building
Through participation in the both the 2-Week International Workshop and the 8-Week Asian Activist Training, you will gain experience building two earthen structures. You will also be involved with the preparation process and the follow-up work for these events and building projects. You will learn everything from brick-making to the foundation to finishing touches. We focus on adobe, and include introductions into other earthen building techniques. If you so choose, you may continue working on different parts of the building process as part of your independent projects. Natural building techniques and topics will include:

Brick making
Foundations (not catered for cold climates)
Adobe wall construction
Window and door installation
Earthen plasters & paints
Thatch roofing
Other details such as niches, benches, and sculptural relief
Appropriate design for the tropics
Intros into other earthen building techniques such as cob, "wattle-and-cob", and earth bag construction.


More sustainable living techniques & practices
At Pun Pun we strive to live in a balanced and harmonious way with each other and our surrounding environment. This means designing and implementing integrated, whole land, water, and energy systems, as well as maintaining our personal and interpersonal care. Included in our practices are:
Rain water catchment
Rocket stoves for cold climates
Fermentation of foods & drinks
Forest walks
Herbal medicine collection
Working with bamboo
Composting toilets
Thai massage
Thai cooking
Yoga & Tai Chi
Meditation

And more based on individual interests.

Schedule
Interns are expected to work 30 hours a week. Weekends are free if there are no other programs taking place. There will be 2 week-long breaks within the 6 months.



17 November- 30 December: This time will be used for introductions and orientation to the Pun Pun community and other interns, as well as preparation for the 2-Week International Sustainable Living & Earthen Building Workshop, which will include brick-making, site set-up, and so on.

1 December - 14 December: Interns will participate in the 2-Week International Sustainable Living & Earthen Building Workshop with other participants. Interns will help as needed and as appropriate. This workshop will host a larger group, between 15-30 people from various countries.

15 December- 7 February: Interns will be given guidance in picking an independent project of their choosing, whether that be designing and working a garden, or working on developing building skills, or a bit of both. During this time, interns can help on the farm in other ways, such as giving group tours and orienting other visitors. Field visits to other farms/NGOs/building projects within Thailand can also be arranged during this time.

7 February- 22 February: Help prepare for the 8-Week Asian Activist Training.

22 February- 22 April: Participate in the 8-Week Asian Activist Training. Depending on their interest, interns can also act as assistants and facilitators, and be part of the planning and execution of this Training. This training will involve 10 other Asian activists from various countries.

22 April- 17 May: This time is for follow-up with what interns have learned, finishing projects that have been started. There will be an evaluation at the end.


Facilitators
Jo Jandai, Peggy Reents, Ratchabodin "Dai" Boonchaiyo, Michel Spaan, the rest of the Pun Pun Team, and other guests.
Accommodation
Simple accommodation is available. You can choose to sleep in an earthen cottage shared with others, or bring your own tent for more privacy. Please bring your own sleeping gear. You can also expect to bathe in a pond, compost your waste, eat simple communal meals, and wash your clothes by hand. All facilities are basic and shared by everyone at Pun Pun.
Food
Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are included. We share meals, as well as meal prep. Everyone is expected to pitch in and help. We eat both from our farm, as well as from market. Please let us know if you have any special food restrictions.
Internet
The closest internet is in the small neighboring village, which is about a 20 minute ride by bus. Expect slow access.
Fee
A sliding scale of $3,000-$4,000USD-- you decide based on what you can give. Please be as generous as you are able. Anything over $3,000 will go towards the creation of a book about earthen building. Your contribution also covers your food, simple accommodations, tuition for the 2-Week International Sustainable Living & Earthen Building Workshop in December and the 2-Month Asian Activist Training from February to April, as well as sponsorship of an Asian activist from a developing country who will participate in the 2-Month Asian Activist Training. If you need creative ways to raise your contribution, we have letters written by past participants that have helped them raise some, or all, of their money. We are happy to share these upon request. Once we receive the above information we will be in touch with you. Upon confirmation of your participation in the Pun Pun Internship, a non-refundable $800USD deposit is needed to hold your place. Upon receipt of your deposit we will send you the rest of the pertinent information including directions, what to bring, etc. The remainder of you contribution should be paid in full by November 1st, 2005.
