Mechanical and electrical

I was just wondering if any of you have come across any handy "rules of thumb" when it came to designing basic HVAC or lighting systems. I'd love to know how to approximate the CFM output needed for a specific space or the number of luminaries required to produce a certain illuminance in a room without having to bust out the long-hand equations or hunt for coefficients of utilization on the manufactuer's website when all I really want to know is if it's going to be too bright or too windy in a certain room. Anybody stumble across any handy rules?
