That new Mars is sick; I think its my favorite out of all of them. You cant replace Jon Theodore, but they finding great replacements. I cant believe I missed them this year.

any black flag fans out there? (meta, dammson, i'm lookin' @ you)

album-wise, where do i start?

i only have one black flag album and that's 'damaged'. i haven't listened to their other albums.

the lineup in this album is:
henry rollins-vocals
dez cadena-guitar vocals
greg ginn-guitar
charles dukowski-bass
robo-drums

robo played drums for misfits also

released in 1984

it has some of their well-known songs: t.v. party, six pack, rise above, spray paint. the ones that actually got some radio play. it was also henry rollins' first album with the band. i think rise above was featured in some 80's skate movie. i love the guitar riff on rise above. i tend to listen to the songs i've mentioned above or the "hits" of the album. as a counterpart, the rest of the album is dark.

the album cover on damaged is strange. usually they had their signature illustrations but on this one they decided to use a photograph. that's henry rollins on the cover. the album cover that i remember seeing at the record shop and being fascinated with was everything went black and this one...

I haven't seen the Roots live in more than a few years.
However, when i did they killed it. Amazing stage presence and group of multi-muscians. Especially for a Hip Hop group.

I assume they are still killing it given their perfomance on David's Chapelle's Block Party video, plus recent reviews from friends et al.

Just picked up Koushik's first full length album Out My Window this week:

I don't really know how to describe it; very earthy/sunshiny sublime filtered retro sounding acoustics with hard drum loops and horns (think Dilla meets Four Tet meets Beta Band meets RJD2 meets DJ Shadow). A really interesting act to add to the Stones Throw army, but he fits pretty well. I've been listening to it on repeat all day every day since I've gotten it; I'd also recommend his EP of various single called Be With to get you through the winter months.

For Black Flag fans... or maybe not for Black Flag fans...
Check out Rise Above by Dirty Projectors.
it's a conceptual album which re-imagines Black Flag's Damaged purely from how the lead singer of Dirty Projectors remembers the album. outside of the album's connection to Damaged, i think the album is fantastic and worth checking out. listen to the title track, rise above.

Anybody like Jandek? I just found out he will be doing a performance in my small college town of all places and am trying to decide whether or not to go.
It is tomorrow and thus pretty last minute. Plus, i haven't been in much of a "folk" mood lately (been listening to a lot more dubstep and grime of late).. But then again problem one of my only (in the near to long term) chances to see him.

And yes while i am not a rapid fan am familiar with his stuff.

I saw Dino-Saur JR last night. Fuck yeah!!! That was an awesome show.
Plus, i found out Isis will be in G'ville in about a month.
Which should be an even more awesome rock heavy show.

what am I th eonly one who is intereste din atlking about music?

To back to back awesome music shows this week.

Isis and Mr. Lif. Will probably end up missing both because they are during the week. Who books that shit??

Question so if I only go to one which should i see. Some really awesome poltiical rap or some heavy, orchestral/symphonic slow jamming metal?

id go with mr lif... but thats mostly cause i dont get the whole isis thing...

May 26, 09 2:13 pm  ·

lletdownl,
As in you don't like them?

Personally, Gainesville just lacks decent loud guitar music (that isn't bad local punk) and I like to support such shows when I can.

lletdownl

yeah not a big fan of isis or the genre in general, and mr lif is pretty good... even a person such as myself thats not a big hip hop fan would be down for seeing them...

im personally excited to see menomena at the division st festival in chicago on sunday... have been a fan of theirs for years and have missed them every other time theyve been through chicago...

May 26, 09 2:52 pm  ·
 ·

menomena should put ona good show. And you are right I am sure Mr. Lif will tear it up...
