Here in the UK the new Planning Bill includes provision for a design statement to accompany every planning application to assist the Planner in assessing the quality of the design. Bullshit prevails, much of it from the master bullshiters - Architects.
What they say: “The principle of the design is based on the successful ”˜Poundbury' model. We have positioned the houses to help create an intimate character to the development. The road and pavements have been designed with an irregular form to minimise the formality of the layout.”
What they mean: “A cul-de-sac”
What they say: “The area's characteristic style is predominantly half-timbered housing”
What they mean: “There are a couple of half-timbered houses in an adjoining street, and it just so happens that one of our standard homes has a half-timbered look.”
The many and varied problems with the planning system are at a critical level. I'd like to see increased penalties for ”˜applicants' who abuse the system but this can only be implemented with improving the standing in the planning profession to reflect both design quality and the reality on the ground.
Any ideas on harsher penalties that could be imposed by planners on crap design or care to share some Design Statement planning bullshit ?
Lies, damned lies and design statements
