songs about architects

mdler

I can think of three...

"Thru these Architects Eyes" - David Bowie (Phillip Johnson)

"So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" - Simon and Garfunkel (FLLY)

"Fuller, Richard Buckminster" - Artichoke (Bunkminster Fuller)

Any others???

pavement's son "the hexx" has a line that says "architecture students are like virgins with an itch they can not scratch/never build a building until your'e 40 (i think) what kind of life is that?"

33.3 has a song called "an open letter to buckminster fuller" but there are no words to it.

Are you looking for songs about particular architects or just about architects and architecture in general.

"Army Corp of Architects" by Death Cab for Cutie

Also, not songs but on a related note, Angels in the Architecture and Architecture in Helsinki are both bands with great names.

she said she'd married her an architect
who kept her warm and safe and dry
she would have liked to say she loved the man

This is a bit of a stretch, but "Jesus, Etc." by Wilco. Now the song is hardly about architecture--okay, it's not about architecture at all, but it does have some very general references to architecture (or structure at least)... now I'm a student and an intern at a small office in Manchester, NH and the 60-year-old principal was singing specifically those lines from "Jesus, Etc." a few weeks back. I got a real kick out of it because of both his age and his selectivitiy in which lines he was singing...

also I read in the liner notes of my cd copy of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (tragically polluted with bonus tracks) that "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" is possibly about Simon's creative relationship with Garfunkel, a former architecture student, coming to an end...

finally, I've also heard that all the members of Pink Floyd except Syd Barrett were architecture students.. anyone know if this is true?

has a song about Eliel saarinen, and lots of architecturally relevant content in many of their songs.

I started to make a compliation cd once of songs about architecture, that had to have architecture in the lyrics or song title somewhere. The track list was huge, i found tons of songs. if i can find it, i'll post it here.

since some of the talking heads came out of risd (not arch) and they have an album called 'songs about buildings and food', it's interesting to see byrne's tongue-in-cheek description of architecture in 'true stories' > basically a celebration of butler buildings: you can put any sign you want on 'em!

i think one of the talking heads guys was studying architecture when they started the band, and a lot of their songs talk about buildings and cities... or even their movie True Stories.

the three back to back posts where people think
of the same thing at the same time in this thread
is kind of creepy...

'our house...in the middle of our street'

the talking heads ref made me think of 'this is
not my beautiful house.."

i guess it's a bit off topic though since it's really only
architecture and not architects...i just was amazed by
the similar thinking folk.

King Crimson - 'The ConstruKction of Light'

also by Fripp's subjects, fractured and reunited under different names, the great box The ProjeKcts (that sounds archi too), has a couple of reworkings on that song (rehabilitation or alternative projects) called 'Heavy ConstruKction' (concrete and stone maybe..) and 'Light ConstruKction' (wood and metal?.. either musically and architecturally)

that box is amazing..

the Scissor Sisters has a song (number nine or 10 on their new CD, not sure what it's called) that uses a few architecture metaphors, that's the best I got...

"...skyscrapers rise between us, keeping me from finding you...if the concrete architecture disappeared there'd be so few..."

sorry, it was on when I got to work this morning...

Alice Cooper's 'Big Apple Dreamin' (Hippo)' has this line about the UNO skyscraper by Corbu, Niemeyer, Howard Robertson et altri, and the whole fascination for New York's grandeur:

"We're so young and pretty, we're so young and clean
So many things that we have never seen
Let's move from Ohio, sell this dam' old store
Big Apple dreamin' on a wooden floor

Skyscrapers and subways and stations
Staring up at the United Nations

New York is waiting for you and me, baby
Waiting to swallow us down
New York, we're coming to see what you're made of
Are you as great as you sound

Heard about them massages, and all those dirty shows
I read somewhere some places never close
While we waste time on yokels, comin' through the door
Big Apple dreamin' on a wooden floor

Skyscrapers and subways and stations
Staring up at the United Nations

New York is waiting for you and me, baby
Waiting to swallow us down
New York, we're coming to see what you're made of
Are you as great as you sound"

someone once told me that the dude that committed suicide in Mars Volta (the one that deloused in the comatorium was written about) was an architecture student.

now defunct 'Pavement' singer Stephen Malkmus was an architecture student and dropped out to become a god in the indie world.

About Pink Floyd, Yes they did attend
the Regent Street Polytechnic School in London. And they (Rick, Roger, and
Nick) were architecture students. Says Nick Mason in his new book, Inside
Out, "I had strolled into studying architecture with no great ambition....In
later years we would become heavily involved in everything from the
construction of lighting towers to stage design. Our training allowed us the
luxury of making relatively informed comments whenever we brought the real
experts in." Also, one of the first names of the group was The
Architectural Abdabs. Later The Screaming Abdabs, T-Set or Tea Set,
Meggadeaths, and finally The Pink Floyd. I could ramble on in this vein for
hours, but I will spare you.

There's a Pulp song on A Different Class, I think. Goes something like this 'He's an architect and such a lovely guy, and he'll stay with you until the day you die..." but you don't want him because he's not good in bed... (that's the gist of it anyway) architect portrayed as cuckold, nice.
