Becoming an interior Designer!

ARCHITKD

does anyone know the procedure to become an interior designer? My fiance is trying to become an interior designer, but she went to school as an industrial designer. Is it possibel without an interior design major?

If not, what can she do as far as gettingthe experience in the field, and taking some courses in her spear time?

Thank you for your help!

Shifting from ID to interiors doesn’t exactly sound running away and joining the Foreign Legion. What if she just tried getting a job with an interiors firm for a while and learning on the job? Some place big enough to let her specialize on what she know already while she picks up whatever else maybe. Specific training is cool and all but at some point it comes down to pitching the abilities you do have to people who can help you develop ones you don’t yet.

Actually - no training is needed what so ever. Anyone can legally hang out a sign and call themselves an interior designer. However, if you want to join some of the professional societies out there for Interior Designers, you'll have to look at various programs offering you certification for ID.

Visit the website ncidq.org. This should give some indication with regard to licensing and requirements for interior design certification.

Archi-F:

I think you are talking about the term "Interior Decorator" that usually isn't legally defined. In our state, and neighboring ones as well, Interior Designer is a licensed professional, very similar to Architect and Engineer, and calling yourself one without the credentials will get you censure and fine from the state licensing board.

NOlArch:

Only in 19 states - so I guess it depends where you're at:

Interior designers are registered by title or licensed to practice in nineteen states and the District of Columbia [and Puerto Rico]. In the United States where interior designers are registered by title, no one may use the title interior designer or registered interior designer unless they have met the requirements for education, experience, and examination as set forth in the statutes.

Taken from: http://www.asid.org/design_basics/professional_credentials/what_is_registered_designer.asp

In the other 31 states - anyone can call themselves an Interior Designer w/o penalty.
