I am currently working on a personal website, that I am designing with Dreamweaver and was wondering if it is generally a good or bad idea to include such things in ones portfolio (for grad school). The design of the site allows for a good screenshot as it doesn't run off the page (as in, there is no scrolling involved).
This also got me thinking whether it might be a good idea to include screenshots of a film I made on 8mm. I hopefully will have this film transferred to DVD and was wondering what the best way to get a high quality screen still might be. Using the 8mm film is not possible as I am living in Japan and don't have the film with me.
on a tangent, how can one get a screen shot of a website in high resolution so that you can print it out? hitting "print screen" only gives u a 72dpi image.
taboho, you can't. screen resolution is 72dpi. the only thing you could do to make it look better is too make it smaller >> 72dpi at half size is then 144dpi and so on.
All images viewed in a web browser are displayed at 72dpi, even a "600dpi", 4"x5" photo, it just looks huge on screen, 4 times as big when rendered at 72dpi and reads as a 16"x20" on your web screen and will print pixelated (72dpi) when used straight from a browser. If the user took the larger image and printed it from Photoshop, it would be a crisp 4x5 at 600dpi.
YYour best option would be to have a small preview image on screen (400px X 300px) and have an additional link to a high-res or vector based (DWF, PDF) version of the same image for download and high quality printing if the viewer wants.
if the site is one of your best things, i would put it in. if it isn't, i wouldn't. the only problem i have with it is that it is itself a new portfolio of your work, which when placed in your other new portfolio may seem redundant. i don't know if you could include a cd your printed copy, but that might be an option.

crank your resolution up as high as you can on a giant monitor, then do the print screen. if it is a site which adjusts to fit the screen, you will get more pixels.
There is a myth that circulates at my school about a woman who got in on a portfolio entirely comprised of “soft porn†pictures of herself. I go to kind of a weird school and I’m sure that if there is any truth in the story that there was more going on with her portfolio that just the pictures but the take home message, I think, is that anything you put in should be part of a story you are telling about who you are, what you do and why its architecture. It’s more obvious how to do this when it’s a building but anything could work if you can explain it
