Dubai fire

Volunteer

A 63 story luxury hotel and apartment building is engulfed in flames in Dubai. Supposedly everyone escaped.

They had a tower fire there this spring, at the unfortunately named "Torch Tower." It had flammable aluminum/poly composite panels. The UAE updated their code, but a lot of their towers still have those panels - I wonder if "The Address" (which is a totally obnoxious name for a building) did too.

My aunt is at the hotel and we've been trying to reach her for hours!

I hope she's alright!

Not gonna lie, though, I chuckled at "Oh poop"

Fire codes, they are good when they are applied. This looks exactly like the torch tower fire.  I hope there is a retrofit mitigation system in the works as this will be a repeated problem.

What the fuck burns on the outside of a high rise....they kept saying the fire was outside the tower.  They also said no injuries...Love freedom of the press.

It's this aluminum cladding garbage material they use all over the city and on high rises.  Ugly as shit and clearly not fire resistant, this is the third time this shit catches fire.  They're effectively wrapping a concrete shell with flammable paper it seems.

She is safe, thank you all! Not sure why she didn't get back to us though but I'll talk to my cousin to see if he knows more. Here is the weird thing about her travels: 1. She was on that cruise thank sank in Italy, a trip before 2. She flew on that plane that was crashed by the pilot from Spain to Germany, few days before Told our family, we should not let her travel any more

And this is why the IBC requires NFPA 285 testing ... as well as other limitations for the use of metal composite material cladding.
