Where should you go study for your Masters? or Doctorates? Where should you go do your Doctorate research? What Master program should you sign up for? Which College is the best of the best?
Wow. Thanks. Um....many people do not have a CHANCE to get that experience. I think that is the problem/wall most young people run into these days.
Your point is well taken though. Fewer people should be going to school to be architects. I know from first-hand experience that the best degrees do not really make that much difference these days. It is time to head for the hills.
Although I must say, many "architects" with NO DEGREE AT ALL give the profession a bad name. There are some things you SHOULD learn in school. We do not let someone become an engineer by working for one for many years. One does not become an accountant without a degree. I have preached enough about regulation, but there should be SOME barrier to the tidal wave of "architects" always being fed into the system since about 1975 or so. An ARCHITECT is one who has gotten a professional degree, finished an internship, and passed the ARE's. Anyone else is support or IT.
I agree that there has to be regulation, because of the tidal wave of architects. But CMCDCTRL, you and I both know that the people who get to design buildings in architecture offices are not exactly knowledgeable, or in a lot of cases even licensed, then if you do pass your ARE's and you know how to put a building together you get labeled a so called technician, I know i didn't have to explain all of this to experienced people in the profession, its more for the sake of newbies. On the flip side of things there are also people who are not quite licensed yet, but know more than licensed architects, in some cases teaching them how to do things.
So, CMNDCTRL, we can both agree that regulation, and the bureaucrats cannot control the fact that people With a Degree and no experience, are designing buildings, its a broken system in a lot of ways we must agree on that.
jake,
life isn't fair sometimes, acceptance might be high, yet, not one architect alive today could begin to fill Frank L Wrights shoes how do you explain that?
"The old school architects were tough dudes, if they were alive, they would say that all new architects are pussies, ass kissing, prostitutes."
Isn't that what the 'old' guys said of themselves?
"Architects are pretty much high-class whores. We can turn down projects the way they can turn down some clients, but we've both got to say yes to someone if we want to stay in business."
all due respect was just a rich boy with an architecture degree. I won't go into berating him by posting what a great architect and others thought of him.
Jump you dont know what my point is? are you an architect?
zen, no offense but you and trace seem to be reading the highlights of things people repeat most, about architects, are you insinuating that their is some wisdom in what you guys mentioned?
Why didn't all those great Architects even get a Barch? What were they thinking you say? (scratching your head)
Um, because [if you are referring to FLW] he was born in 1867. You could also call yourself a doctor back then too if you carried a leather satchel and a stethoscope.
Its not hard. And as I tried to illustrate earlier, an Ando is an exception and his brilliance is not a direct result of 'degree avoidance'.
I frankly can not understand based on the post - what is the point?
not sure it matters, but: architect +PhD + run own small office - also ridiculous amounts of life experience ( but that is not hard to get - so far all i have had to do to get it was not die.)
I heard that University of Life's dean is stepping down. It seems like the ghost of FLW would like to finally venture off to the spirit world. I think they'll be putting an official search through craigslist to find a suitable replacement.
DA I like your style. I would prove how right I am about my point but I would hate to lower myself to the level of all these FLW haters. FLW was right and Ando is wrong, if you all are too stupid to get that then you shouldn't be architects.

The number One greatest University Architecture research program is drum role please.
"THE University of Life, aka "THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS!"
Wow. Thanks. Um....many people do not have a CHANCE to get that experience. I think that is the problem/wall most young people run into these days.

are they accredited?
Does the University of Life offer scholarship and housing? Do they have a study abroad option?
I hear their acceptance rate is quite high, which worries me they let anyone in.
Just got my rejection letter from the University of Life. Guess it's limbo or nirvana for me.

on and toasteroven, if you have to ask...
seems like Life U focuses more on chiropractic degrees these days. This explains a lot...
jake,
life isn't fair sometimes, acceptance might be high, yet, not one architect alive today could begin to fill Frank L Wrights shoes how do you explain that?
very funny Thom y
no one can fit franks shoes because his feet were so bloody tiny. we're talkin wee little mousey angelina ballerina shoes...
For every Ando, there is a Poulson or two
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Poulson
That Poulson guy sounds like a terrible guy, ok jump very funny. My point still stands.
The old school architects were tough dudes, if they were alive, they would say that all new architects are pussies, ass kissing, prostitutes.
^ except Norman Foster :) but he is considered kind of old school too, anyway../
you have a point?
love this thread.

P. Johnson,
all due respect was just a rich boy with an architecture degree. I won't go into berating him by posting what a great architect and others thought of him.

trace - thats true, I also read somewhere:
"There are 3 professions that have clients, the laywers, the architects and the prostitutes."
^ I think it says there are 3 professions that call their customers "clients"...
zen, no offense but you and trace seem to be reading the highlights of things people repeat most, about architects, are you insinuating that their is some wisdom in what you guys mentioned?
go ahead check my spelling for the word their replace it with there.
DA to answer your intial question, to wit:
Why didn't all those great Architects even get a Barch? What were they thinking you say? (scratching your head)

Diabase I could refute you so easily, but I'm not on here to make you or other people look bad.
Please do.
what country are you talking about where people could just call themselves doctors without an education?
So as i understand it you are saying Tadeo Ando is on par with FLW? that is laughable.
if your response to this thread is to get me involved in some petty discussion you don't get it, or you refuse to admit that I'm on to you clowns.
I frankly can not understand based on the post - what is the point?
not sure it matters, but: architect +PhD + run own small office - also ridiculous amounts of life experience ( but that is not hard to get - so far all i have had to do to get it was not die.)
I am not talking about a country, I am talking about an era.
Ando is an 'untrained' architect. I'd have an Ando building over an FLW any day.
yet another thread where Dickless posts inane bullshit, and does nothing, nothing to back up his
theory...dia, i'm with you, Ando could design circles around, and kick the shit out of FLW...
I heard that University of Life's dean is stepping down. It seems like the ghost of FLW would like to finally venture off to the spirit world. I think they'll be putting an official search through craigslist to find a suitable replacement.
FLW was a huge anti-semite anyways
DisplacedArchitect - you are probably right, but I just love to repeat insulting quotes about architects, it makes my day :)
what theory are you talking about? I never proposed such a thing?
B3tadinesutures, isn't theory a little bit beyond your usual vocabulary, you silly goose.
ya but anti-Semitism was all the rage back then.
DA I like your style. I would prove how right I am about my point but I would hate to lower myself to the level of all these FLW haters. FLW was right and Ando is wrong, if you all are too stupid to get that then you shouldn't be architects.
If you guys actually picked up a book you would know how right I am.
