50 California Lobby

The ownership of 50 California engaged the team with the goal of designing a public lobby space that is a sensible and enduring long-term investment, yet authentic and true to the building. The first priority was addressing the overall experience for guests, creating a clear entrance and an identity for the building. By relocating the existing entrance from Davis Street to prominent California Street, a new focal point emerged. Secondary entrances at Davis Street are highlighted by the concierge style reception desk and newly commissioned artwork.  Modern environmental signage installed on both street sides of the building aid in more clearly identifying the property.

Expanding and merging the lobby experience from beyond the curtain wall to the outside plaza and streetscape creates an illusion of a seamless public space. Extending the lobby’s ceiling treatments and a frameless glass perimeter, the design team was able to blur the lines between interior and exterior, creating a natural oasis in the heart of the Financial District.  The wall panels are uniquely fabricated, derived from a single olive ash log and are quarter-cut to enhance a consistent architectural texture in the space. The figurative stone seating blurs the lines between furniture, natural elements and sculptural figures. The resulting design has a more contemporary feel capitalizing on the volume, scale and original design of the building and site.

The lobby’s new palette of materials aligned with nature that support the vision for a classic, simple aesthetic. Introducing lighter finishes and materials along with new LED lighting technology contributes to the reduction of energy consumption to light the lobby. The new reception desk contrasts with the wall paneling, larger than the previous desk, endorsing a new concierge-style reception. New finishes extend into the elevator lobbies to complete the experience.

Marked by simplicity and an elegance that enhances the guest experience, the new lobby provides an active and welcoming space for tenants and visitors alike.
