Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House Expansion

Located in West Philadelphia, the Chestnut Street Ronald McDonald House is the first of what is now over 350 houses in 42 countries. The goal of the Ronald McDonald House, RMH, is to provide temporary residencies to families with seriously ill children by creating a community of comfort and hope. The current site consists of the original mansion of the foundation and a two story addition that was built in 1995. The complex  currently offers 45 private guest rooms, a communal kitchen/dining area and varying sized lounges and play areas. With the ever expanding pediatric programs locating in the surrounding areas the PRMH has looked to expand as well to give as many families assistance as possible.

The new expansion will include a large kitchen and dining area, a concierge's/information desk, a new play area, family lounges, various green spaces, as well as a new eight story guest bedrooms tower.  The concept for the expansion is to highlight the historical mansion and restore some characteristics of its original design. By merging thin city lots, the expansion can span behind the mansion acting as a back drop to the historic architecture. This allows for garden to complement the mansion and connect to the front porch as would have been in traditional design. A larger first floor plate that connects all three building allows for the garden theme to continue to the second floor for more private use for the resident rooms.
