With the new hockey Arena to the south, a new medical building from Wayne State University to the north and small residential homes to the East, the new Detroit Medical Center offers a variety of design opportunities. To reflect the multiple scales of the surrounding buildings DMC’s mass is broken by carving into the program. The resulting smaller masses are categorized into active and repose spaces. The ‘active’ outboard masses are cladded with fins that represent common movements of athletes that are illustrated in the Muybridge diagram below. The inboard programs are occupied by gardens that promote healing. These reveals, that are the result of the carving, wrap the building making sure each level has access to healing gardens. The wrapping ends at the rooftop garden which holds and mixed internal/external fitness center.
