2010 AIA Albuquerque – Merit Award

This 16,450 s.f. renovation of the old Architecture Annex building on Central Avenue was designed to meet the complex programmatic requirements of the University of New Mexico Tamarind Institute, the leading international art facility, to teach and preserve lithography. The renovation provides the Tamarind Institute with a contemporary storefront gallery to Route 66, while preserving the brick and structural façade of the original 1950’s IBM showroom.

The project required a major renovation of the existing building shell to provide new lithography press rooms, classrooms, gallery, and offices, while a new stair and elevator tower connects the lithography workshop ant the public galleries with a private artist in residence penthouse. A two story storefront gallery facing Route 66 connects the inner life of the lithography press areas with the second floor gallery and print archive areas.

This project received a LEED Gold rating. Contributing features include: efficient exhaust/ventilation systems, natural lighting and ventilation, an underground stormwater retention and distribution system, and green and local materials.
