2012 AIA Albuquerque – Citation Award

The Truro Building is located on the Santa Fe Railyard. The building program required flexible ground floor gallery spaces for LewAllen Galleries, with offices on a mezzanine, basement art storage, and a separate flexible leasable office space on a second floor.

The design intent was to reinforce a contemporary arts corridor along Paseo de Peralta as described in the Santa Fe Railyard Masterplan, and to create a signature gateway building to the Santa Fe Railyard District. The footprint of the building is an ‘L’ consisting of two distinctive gallery wings at ground level. The angled form on the street side of the building reflects the resolution of the city street geometry with the bearing of the nearby train tracks. Each side of the Truro Building responds to a specific set of site and urban conditions, and the material palette for the building is derived from the railyard warehouse vocabulary of metal cladding and stucco.

LewAllen Galleries’ interiors are designed to respond to the natural lighting needs of a contemporary art gallery. The main gallery is highly flexible with large 10’ x 15’ pivoting walls that allow for a variety of curatorial venues. At the mezzanine level a wood-lined sculpture balcony provides an overlook both onto the entry plaza and back into the gallery while defining a scaled entry sequence for visitors approaching from the plaza below.
