This design iteration was produced after the course at Orange Coast College had concluded. I wanted to redesign the same project assignment using another design idiom, the Wrightian-Organic School, in this case. The main idea was to give the artists in residence and visitors the sense of being sheltered by a grove of Palm Trees. The building masses closest to the south are taller, as they are closer to the sun. Those masses would act a shading elements. Relating to the adjacent Albert Frey-designed Visitor Center with a contrasting design idiom was an interesting process. The solution was to abstract from the Visitor Center's underlying module, a 30/60 triangle. It was then repeated and varied as needed. The other method of relating to the Visitor Center was to have a new major axis parallel the major axis of the existing roof form. The colors relate to the surrounding desert and/or are complementary colors. The Cover Sheet highlights a bas-relief at the Lower Level that is an interoperability experiment between Rhino/ Grasshopper and Revit. Lastly, the video is one of a series made to explore Video Design.
