Kathmandu, NP
The Regional Education Directorates (RED) of Government of Nepal is constructed at Hetauda, Makawanpur District, Nepal. The building is 2 storeys with plinth area of 584 Sq.m. The design approach adapted for this project was guided by the factor that Hetauda is at hot climate zone and it is a Government Office building. Therefore, cooling system by using solar chimneys has been developed for this project. Simple principle behind the cooling system is that once air was heated inside the solar chimney it will flow upward creating simple draft system in the office room below.2 Huge verandas at east and west side of the building were designed as air cooling zone . Inside the building all the partition walls are designed to have louvers at top & bottom in order to achieve better air cooling effect. The 18 feet high chimneys were designed not only to use solar energy during day time but also to act as normal chimneys at night by creating pleasant air movement due to draft system. During this process due to thermal mass characteristics of concrete slabs, bricks walls and furniture in the rooms. it was observed that the office rooms of this building are much cooler than other governmental office building during morning time. Slanted Vertical Fins at west are designed to protect solar heat during summer and allowing solar heat during winter.
