Project 001. Haven't had an update in a while. Mainly because school just started and I've been working on my first project and here are just some photo booth images of it that I snapped while killing time in Studio.
This non-denominational chapel explores two materials: 4x4 timber and plexi. As one approaches he is met by a massive stacked and leaning timber structure with an angled roof. The whole of the structure seems to almost fall upon the person. However, it sits upon a thick layer of plexi which filters light through from the interior as well as the sides. Resulting is a massive structure "floating" on the planes of Arkansas. The entry is a narrow and dark hallway which acts as a literal and metaphorical threshold. Upon entering one is greeted by two massive stacked plexi staircases which rise up toward an area of overlook. The staircases filter the external light in two ways. First, the surface and the underside of the staircase (as well as the floor of the overlook) is has a matte finish which creates an ambient glow on the walls and the floor. As one walks up these steps, there is effect of walking on light and color. Contrarily, the edges of the plexi (because they are a series of stacked sheets) brings with it a crystal-like quality of light. As a result, because of the orientation of the building (the arrow pointing north toward a river on the site) the sun rises on one end and sets on another. this results in a constantly changing quality, color, and intensity of light from outside. One can imagine the blue light from the sky, the yellow light from the sun, and the green light reflected from the grass in the late morning. This all enters the building and mixes to create a wealth of mixed colors and types of light. At sunset, red and orange and dark blue hues are filtered for a completely different experience. At night, when lit from the inside, the building glows from the edges of the plexi and becomes something completely different again. See you next time!
Weightlessness.
