The Furusato Restaurant at the Sands Hotel, Macau, caters to diners visiting the gambling capitol of the East. For this elegant, sophisticated dining space, we aimed to create a scheme that would communicate drama without overwhelming the senses of the dining guest. The interior finishes at Furusato emphasize reflectivity with the use of mirrors, glass, polished floors, and glimmering gold-toned wall art. Our challenge was to minimize glare while playing up the warm, luxurious tones of dark marble, both polished and carved, deep cherry wood, gold leaf wall treatments, and rich red accent pieces. Sculptural pieces and also a large saltwater fish tank at the sushi bar are illuminated so as to highlight form and create depth. Indirect lighting and recessed linear slots bring a warm, vibrant glow to the entry, bar, and dining areas, and direct the guests’ attention to select pieces of artwork on display throughout the space.
