Light Pole is my exploration on how a fire station can become an institution for the collective community. While also addressing the public program of a community space and a private program of a fire station. Light-Pole is an exploration of the functional uses / program within a fire station that can bring out the architectural aesthetic of the form. Studying fire poles became the emphasis for the parti. By connecting the fire poles to light scoops on the roof will allow for natural light to pervade throughout the program of the fire station. The orientation of the facade connects with the angles of the fire trucks to function moving through the apparatus bay on the ground floor. The method for the facade orientation was to hack the original structure while maintain the context of the site. I wanted keep the original footprint of the building in order to make specific moves in my design. The “4” light scoops also serve as markers to point towards the other “4” fire stations that are working with each other in Ann Arbor. The light scoops are organized spatially in the third floor. Creating objects in the gallery space to designate rooms and places of gathering. The aim for this project was to address the cultural context of the site and establish a cognitive map during an emergency.
