GREEN-HOUSE studio project

Green-House addresses new strategies for co-housing in Detroit. Not only understand how residents can co-habit, but how residents and the surrounding context live together. This project considers how urban agriculture and collective housing situations can interface across multiple scales to produce new residential typologies in Detroit’s Eastern Market neighborhood. The building features four unit sizes from mirco-studios to two-bedroom apartments to allow for a wide range of residents to join the community. The units are arranged around an L-shaped single-loaded corridor, which acts as the social core of the community. Linked by the singular expression of the mesh screen, members of the residential and agricultural communities find many moments to interact across the site. The Greening of Detroit and Keep Growing Detroit manage six out of the seven greenhouses for organization use. The site’s critical position between the Dequindre Cut and the Eastern Market create many opportunities for public engagement. Together, these design moves provide a new hub for Detroit’s urban agriculture initiatives and enlivens a currently dormant site for new forms of community engagement. Because of the neighborhood’s existing relationship with food production, we felt it was critical to preserve the organization’s position on the site and focus our design efforts on creating communal living scenarios through the lens of food production.
