Gateway represents a new vision for North Campus urbanism, oriented around the abundance of natural resources ranging from the Huron River to the Border-to-Border trail. This new vision embraces the lost connection that is meant to hold North Campus to Central Campus, by taking on the challenge of walk-ability between the two campuses, it addresses new opportunities for a 21st Century vision of North Campus. One of these opportunities is to create an inviting gateway into North Campus that represents the Universities efforts in Ecological and Sustainable Energy research, while also being a leader in Living, Learning, and Research across the country. The site plan depicts different nodes that address Fuller Road to allow for more pedestrian activity and establish the gateway as a destination spot instead of a transitional one. Another one of these opportunities is understanding the relationship of North Campus to the non-university communities of Ann Arbor and using the existing trails to create a relationship that ushers people into a central hub of collaboration. These trails aren’t just for the immediate connection to the site, but they also fit within the larger trail system that runs for over 24 miles connecting communities and organizations called the Border-to-Border trail. This new vision behaves like a network that is meant to expand past the boundaries of site and continue to grow as a connection between the communities of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.
