New York, NY
The renovation of this expansive apartment intends to bring back the memory of south Florida’s colorful, modern architecture and the sense of domestic intimacy somewhat lost in contemporary large-scale developments. This North Miami Beach ocean-front condo was redesigned to host a multi-generational family and visiting relatives. A mixture of smaller, more cohesive spaces breaks down the monumentality of the original apartment. These spaces are arranged within an open floor plan layout, which maximizes the amount of light and stunning views filling the interior. This also solves the challenge of having an extensive area without window exposure as an existing condition. This project takes cues from the Art Deco movement to ensure a sense of place. The use of stone, terrazzo, and plaster together with natural woods continues the dialog with the local architecture and geography of Miami as a whole.
