New York, NY
In response to its meadow setting and beachside location, this relaxing home is designed to connect the occupants with the views, light, sounds, and prevailing winds of the island landscape.
To blend in with its surroundings, the house is sided in the region’s typical cedar shingles, and the massing is broken down into different volumes to appear more settled in the landscape. The two main volumes form a breezeway that guides airflow into the house. The entry sequence reveals a semi-inverted plan: the living room is upstairs with an outdoor deck, typical of Vineyard homes to capture views. Five porches and an irregular floor plan with plenty of nooks and alcoves allow inhabitants to find their sun or shade at any time of day.
