West Village Townhouse

This turn-of-the-century townhouse had just received a partial historic restoration prior to its sale. However, the home lacked natural light, storage areas and a program for the lifestyle and family size of the new owners. Incliudede in this challenge was the modernization of this townhouse, while still respecting its original detailing and place in the West Village Historic Landmark district.

  • The front facade was restored and painted, including detailed repairs to the original cast-iron gates and fencing. Entering from the parlor level, one first sees the original detailing of the main staricase and the sitting room. These details gradually give way to the increasingly modern style accented with rich natural materials.
  • The first two stories of the rear facade were replaced with a steel and glass curtain wall, flooding the interior with light and connecting the rear garden. Additionally, the original rear wooden deck was replaced with a glass-floored deck at the parlor level, which allows sunlight to penetrate into the playroom below.
  • The parlor level features a running wall of touch-latch cabinets, creating a smooth wall-like surface with abundant storage within. The open kitchen and dining area can be closed-off from the rest of the house via a concealed moving wall in the event of a catered party.
  • Each of the floors is organized by a specific program, going from play and work rooms on the ground floor level up to a full master suite on the top two floors that includes a double-height media room and a rooftop office with a rear-facing garden roof deck.
