This large penthouse apartment in Midtown Manhattan is both a pied-a-terre for a long-married couple and an event space for their active philanthropic life, as well as a gallery for the couple’s significant collection of modern art. In order to serve these two contrasting roles, the apartment layout has zones that may be opened or closed as needed without leaving a trace. Each side of this full-floor residence is a different wing: entertaining, cooking and dining, guest rooms and finally a large master suite.
Extensive effort was undertaken to design an hvac system that maximizes the ceiling heights throughout. The supply and return slots are camouflaged as reveals as part of the custom decorative trim design.
The expansive kitchen accomodates both the owners and heir staff, but easily accomodates a caterer for events. It features its own restaurant-quality air circulation and filtration system to contain and virtually eliminate cooking odors in this building without kitchen hood venting.
The master suite features his and hers bathrooms, wardrobes and studies.
The apartment is richly finished with Venetian plaster walls and ceilings, silver leaf ceiling coffers, French limestone and cerused oak floors, cerused oak millwork and doors with nickel silver trim and custom furniture throughout.
