China Wall of Traffic

Installation for the exhibition, Brooklyn Utopias In TRANSITion at the Old Stone House.

This outdoor installation at a heavily used Brooklyn playground sought to give viewers a deeper understanding of the history of public space on a section of Flatbush Avenue between Dekalb and Lafayette. The 1/8" scale model includes four cross sections that show different time periods, connected by a fully built model of the intricate subway tunnels in this area;

The time periods shown are:

1928 at Flatbush at Dekalb (with the Paramount Theatre and trolleys that cross the Manhattan Bridge)

mid-block between Dekalb and Fulton showing a proposed vegetated tunnel that would enclose 2 lanes of express traffic and provide a pedestrian walkway above,

Flatbush and Fulton circa 1929 showing the EL train on Fulton

midblock between Fulton and Lafayette showing a new residential tower completed in 2013.
