Upper Street began as an invited competition. After a lengthy process, Groupwork was awarded the project.
The building is made up of 3 residential units with ground floor and basement retail, situated on a WWII bomb site that had been left vacant since 1941. The proposal re-creates the detail of the neighboring Victorian era facades in Terracotta with a punched window pattern aligned with the inhabitation within.
My role was to lead the competition stage and once selected prepare the design concept for the historic review and design review panel. Once the design was approved for this sensitive historic context, I led the planning application documentation and received planning approval in June of 2014.
The original design of the building was made out of laser cut bronze metal but upon meeting with the design review panel the building was rethought with a terracotta toned concrete. The form work was CNC milled and the concrete cast in strategic sections. `
