The Architectural Ceramics Assemblies Workshop, ACAW, provides an opportunity to explore the material possibilities of terra cotta in the development of innovative cladding systems. I was able to assist SOM in its early stages of research and design development. The team’s design intent aimed to allow for the penetration of light into the module and as a result, a dye was produced to create a textured interior cell to highlight the materiality of the material. A range of extrusion manipulation studies were performed including wire-cutting, saw-cutting, and 4-axis wire-cutting. Black glazing acts as a contrast to the lightness of architectural terracotta.
