“Hybridizing typologies” takes advantage the Florentine site of the studio and its’ observation of the Italian historical strata as the main tool for design.
Extracting the main formal ideas from precedents visited across Florence, this design proposal for the old jail of the murate becomes a contemporary abstraction of historical forms. Through a extensive investigation of formal strategies and the trial of all possible formal outcomes, “Hybridizing typologies” utilizes a total of six different combinations of typological parts in order to revive the history of the old site.
These combinations allow for the successful design development of a kindergarden, a public market, a library and a community center. An aggregation of contemporary public programs that at the same time, credit the importance of typological architecture in Italian history.
