Contemplation Shelf

This contemplation shelf was made to complement the Japanese Contemplation Bench for my client’s spa room.  The shelf is held together through tenons, and a wedge is driven through the tenon to hold the shelf sides in place.  While designing it, the client showed me a rake he uses to rake the rocks in his Japanese Zen garden that was held together with a wedge.  He loved that it was all coming together along the same Japanese-inspired design aesthetic.

The top and bottom of the shelf sides have an arch cut into them to add visual interest.  The whole shelf is made from walnut and finished with a satin finish.
