Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital of Chicago

Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago in Chicago, IL was opened at June, 2012. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is a 245-bed children's general facility with 10,948 admissions in the most recent year reported. It performed 4,211 annual inpatient and 13,070 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 64,748 visits. Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is a teaching hospital.

SCB was responsible for the design of the exterior and interior public spaces for the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.  Special exterior design features include a pedestrian bridge to the central parking facility, two bridges to the adjacent Prentice Women's Hospital, Sky Garden, Sky Lobby and Overlook.  Special interior public space design features include a freestanding oval elevator bank, suspended whale exhibit, Captain Streeter coffee bar, aquarium, illuminated information desks, garden market themed food court, healing garden, entertainment stage and tree house.

The urban site presented a particular challenge for the design team with a fairly small building footprint, leaving a question as to how to best accommodate growing patient volumes in the new hospital's emergency department (ED). Using research, simulation, and meetings with key internal and external stakeholders, the design team developed nontraditional solutions for both the location and patient access to the ED.
