Correct Donna. His password was apparently Thankyou7... but I was too late to the game to do anything with it since someone else rand wild with it... I too was preoccupied with Canada's win over the Czechs... gota have priorities.

He did leave a long and rather abusive rant on TC.

"He became abusive, wrote some highly unflattering things about the direction America is headed,"

Is this so unusual given how unflattering US have become? I happened to read that post and Koz didn't say anything more than half of people in this country say everyday. Is it sacrilege to point to idiocracy? How come this forum always needs someone to beat up?

Jan 3, 17 12:19 pm  ·

I doubt he got banned simply because he said some unflattering things about the US. More than likely it was the giving out of his password and losing control of his account.

Changing subjects ... this might sound like a weird question but, do any of you take special notice of good and/or bad sealant joints? I'm trying to figure out if it is simply a design/aesthetics thing (good joints perform and look better than bad ones), or if it is something I brought with me from working construction (taking care in one's craftsmanship).

Damn you, Rick+roll! Totally got me. :-)

EI....

I'm a joint nazi on site. I've made the current sub redo two large parking levels recently because they did not tool the smoke sealant joints as specified.  The general stated, correctly, that the performance was the same...  I did not care, it looks like shit, redo.

The client was so pissed at the trades at the project meeting.

Jan 3, 17 12:53 pm  ·
 ·

Got me too Donna. Damn.

I always take notice of good/bad sealant job. I had a project where sealant was done very poorly - they didn't like me when I asked them to redo it.

Jan 3, 17 12:53 pm  ·
 ·

For me, it goes beyond the job site. I notice them everywhere. The latest has been the caulking around a fixture in the men's room ... just terrible. Also, sanded sealant joints are popping up more and more around town and most of them are terrible. The sand gets worn away where the sealant had skinned over before they applied the sand, and your left with a joint that is as patchy as Joe Dirt's facial hair.

Heard something earlier today that was very upsetting. I can't get into it here, as it has professional implications - but it's definitely unsettling and making me very wary of ever voicing my struggles again.

I'm sorry, Josh. I wish that your only affliction was being a caulk and sealant snob!

Sealant is a big one.

Glazing gaskets in storefront systems... Why can't contractors fix the gaskets when they roll under at the glass??? It's a simple fix.

Thanks NS - will probably go incognito on here too for some posts. Can I have Kozumelle's screen name?

Jan 3, 17 5:32 pm  ·
 ·

That sucks Josh. Wishing you the best in getting through it.

I admire you who post under your real name. I occasionally debate whether I should post more under my real name as I think there could be some professional benefit from it ... but then I see things like this and decide it's better I remain anonymous. That decision is also reinforced when people post about their employers (or others) getting contacted for things they've said on the site. The same goes for every time Balkins posts about making sure someone's license is current.

Posting anonymously also allows me to feel free posting about my caulk fetish without it getting associated with my real name. Speaking of ... I'm brainstorming titles for a new thread where you are encouraged to post photos of sealant joints - good or bad - and discuss. Anyone have any feedback or other suggestions?

  • "Show us your caulk" ... straightforward and hard to misinterpret the purpose of the thread.
  • "A bad caulk is a leaky caulk" ... highlights the fact that a joint's integrity is key in acheiving proper performance.
  • "Good joints are hard to come by" ... if you live in an area where good joints are hard to find, this title might help you get your fix vicariously from people where good joints are easy to find.
  • "Caulk porn" ... playing off the common name for threads or blogs discussing beautiful stairs and their design but I worry it would be only limited to good looking sealant joints.
  • "Caulk central" ... probably overplayed, but it would allow people to identify the thread as one where people come together to talk about caulking.

When I first started dating my husband he was a property manager for an apartment building and I asked him what kinds of things he had to do for the job and he said every spring he caulked all the joints and I thought that was really hot.

"I can roll me a good Joint."   oh....that is not the kinda  joint you be talkin bout...Someone hand me a light!

No reason to think about the imploding health care system in this country, just roll me a fatty, and be Happy!   My health insurance just took one of those "Heart Attack" jumps.  I have spent the last 30 days fighting with the insurance company via  dial a phone assistance.  I keep getting people who sound like they are still in high school and can't even put a clear statement together...then they say...I'm going to get an supervisor....who never seems to be found....and usually after a couple hours we are back at point one with no resolution.  So I have been listening to a lot of elevator music on my speaker phone where the volume seems to ebb and tide, just to be more annoying.  The insurance companies  are  reducing staff just to be sure everyone feels the pinch on their insurance.  I think it is an industry wide plot of corporate greed~~~~~  Stay tuned I may be shooting my telephone if this keeps going on.

Health care insurance problems? My 7-month old is going to see his cardiologist tomorrow for his usual by-monthly testing and 24-hour monitoring. Won't cost me a penny, except for $15 parking.

Can we talk about how contractors think caulk is the solution to everything?

Didn't get a storefront joint tight enough?  Caulk it.  (and jokingly call it buttering the joint)

Didn't flash something properly?  Caulk it.

Weep holes at the bottom of a window?  People inside say it's cold near the window.  Surely there shouldn't be holes there.  Caulk it.

Cut a piece of lap seam roofing too short?  Caulk the gap!

SenJon, only if we can also talk about how architects love to show a bunch of different materials coming together perfectly flush with each other! (Sorry, former contractor here.)

On another forum, my tagline was "caulking is not a piece of trim," so I agree with you that caulking is over-used. It's also surprisingly difficult to do a really good job with it, so I try to design assemblies that don't need much of it.

My friend's dad is a contractor and he caulked some seams at her house and some of the caulking is literally two inches thick but that is just where it is goopiest, but it is all super goopy. I'll take a pic next time I'm there. I don't even know how it was possible. He does like to drink a lot and is probably close to being blind.
