its a shitty choice to have to make won.  i don't think hillary can get too carried away with war since we're already mired in a quagmire that's overextended our military due to policies started in previous administrations.  it's not like we're going to start a war in iraq, syria, and afghanistan if hillary gets elected, the way jill stein thinks.  that already happened, and whoever becomes the next president has to deal with it.

on the other hand, trump will apparently capitulate to russia's colonial expansion, turning our back on our allies, and try to prevent our people from exercising their right to freely practice their religion.  his isolationist strategies will only serve to weaken our national security.

hillary is still clearly the better choice.

let me get this straight rich and foreign interests have been grabbing Hillary's pussy for decades since you know her husband never would. talk about marriage of convenience. an upper class white girl meets a fucking political genius - William Jefferson Clinton - and rides his coat tails into politics and office.......and now the nation is offended by words, get over it kids, Trumps words mean nothing anyway and men like to be sexually assaulted and some girls are into their pussies being grabbed. replace grab with caress and you may have a better shot at getting laid. its beyond me why this is a "presidential" topic.....yes yes his character, I get it...totally going to affect nuclear codes and shit.....words by politicians mean nothing anyway so why we talking about all the shit that comes out of Trumps mouth. its media fodder, gets journalists so excited they have to go out and grab some cock or pussy or both if you are greedy........i know it was mentioned above, but what if Trump just wanted to help make sure a very unqualified war mongerer became president, no taxes for 18 years would be forgiven.....go America! grab some ass! (thats what most sexual assaulters do, also known as men in a club with girls wearing practically nothing with everyone on drugs and alcohol , bumping and grinding on the dance floor, and whoops you hooked up in the bathroom, come on man, i partied in NYC- there is amazing truth in Trumps statement, you worth a million bucks - some girls going to not only ask you to grab their pussy they are going to turn around and accuse you of assault after you do the next day of course, make the newspapers - scandal woohooo, marry their rich clueless lawyer, take him to the cleaners financially and fuck the pool boy who she laters accuses of rape when the pool boy falls in love,etc....which is why i always drank alone in a dive bar and met my wife on the internet).

his isolationist strategies will only serve to weaken our national security.

This is what I find so odd. Liberals, at least the bourgeois liberals that are okay with wars being fought out of sight, out of mind, will make these statements without actually thinking about their ramifications. NATO for instance is nothing, but an extension of the U.S. military. We pay for it; we use it to carry out our strategic initiatives. It kills thousands and thousands of people. Same goes for all of our military bases around the Pacific Rim and the Middle East. What are we achieving here? Why do you think U.S. power is resented around the world? We destabilize countries and regions, alienate civilians, arm rebel groups we have no control of, create massive refugee crises. What the hell are we doing under the current leadership, both Democratic and Republican?

beta figured you would like this to Obama pre 2008 hacked email --''-----------"One of the emails with the subject line "Diversity" to Obama is about potential cabinet choices for his new administration. The email is from Michael Froman, who at the time was a Citibank executive, and went on to serve as US trade representative in the Obama administration. The email lists potential African American, Latino and Asian American candidates -- as well as female candidate options -- for Obama to consider appointing for his cabinet."...............that in a nutshell is institutional bias with every intent on not appointing the best persom for the job but the least white male. talk about stupid.

won, Totally agree with what you said about the isolation comment.  Im all for helping people who need help, like in the case of cosovo, rawanda, Sudan, etc, but we rarely get involved if there isn't some strategic or economic benefits.  BUT, I lol every time I hear the Republican Party  try to portray itself as anti-war.  That is simply untrue and asks people to completely forget all things pre-Obama.

Would you still be arguing for Trump if Bernie Sanders were still in the race?

Nope, I would vote for Bernie (and I did in the primaries). I don't agree with all of Bernie's policy positions, but I agree with his vision for the country which to me is more important. (And he is a good, decent, and honest person.)

I certainly see the irony of my position. I do find Trump's vision for the country scary and divisive. I wouldn't call Trump a good or decent person (though I do think he is more honest than Hillary). But he is the change agent in this election. (Again I wish change were not wrapped in Donald Trump, but that's what we are given.)

Globalization is failing too many people in this country, both economically and politically, and if there is one issue that I think Trump can take on, that is it.

ICYMI we talked with Blair Kamin on the podcast this week and he tells stories of his relationship with Trump. He does a good job describing Trump as a complex human, not just a cartoon character villain, which I appreciate.  No matter how complex he is, though, he's totally unfit to be POTUS.

I honestly think that the Bernie Sanders approach to politics is the antidote to Trumpism. Sanders was able to acknowledge the pain and struggle that white working class voters feel, but he was also able to denounce racism, denounce anti-immigrant and anti-muslim anger, he is unequivocally pro-choice, pro-equal pay for equal work. In my view, he is truly a small "d" democrat. He's not shunning anyone. He's not denying the humanity of his fellow Americans.

Bernie is a decent fellow who sees many of the problems the United States is facing due to the depredation of our elites, but his proposed solutions all assume that it's still 1965. It ain't.

The top marginal tax rate, in 1965, 70%. Sanders, top marginal rate, 52% for those making $10,000,001.00 and above. Yep, you're right, it's not 1965.

He was not able to galvanize the public in the way that Obama did, because he's not Obama.  But it is now clear to everyone that a person with a slightly more polished, perhaps younger, Democratic socialist could take the nomination in the near future.

Through votes cast and small donations received, he reminded the public that they still have agency. The public is still the boss, even though its been tied to a chair in the basement by corrupt politicians and corporate interests.

The percentage of income that people actually pay (the effective tax rate, as opposed to the nominal percentage specified as the marginal tax rate) has been essentially constant for more than 70 years: somewhere around 17% to 19%. No matter how much you crank up the marginal rate, that's all you're going to get.

That's what you call a "frontier of diminishing returns," by the way.

I have my grandfather's old tax returns, going back to the first time he filed (in 1922) to his death in 1981. In 1960, when he was in the top marginal rate category of 91%, he paid no income taxes at all.

If the current polls are reliable… Clinton will be elected by a huge majority of Americans who feel she is not only more dishonest and less trustworthy than Trump, but also more likely to start a war. The polls also indicate that Clinton will get a comfortable majority of the Minority Vote. And that she might carry all fifty states… This may be the year when we finally come face to face with ourselves; finally just lay back and say it — that we are really just a nation of 330 million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns, and no qualms at all about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable. The tragedy of all this is that Trump, for all his mistakes… understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like the Clinton. Trump made some stupid mistakes, but in context they seem almost frivolous compared to the things Clinton does every day of her life, on purpose… Jesus! Where will it end? How low do you have to stoop in this country to be President?

We’ve come to a point where every four years this national fever rises up — this hunger for the Saviour, the White Knight, the Man on Horseback — and whoever wins becomes so immensely powerful, that when you vote for President today you’re talking about giving a man dictatorial power for four years. I think it might be better to have the President sort of like the King of England — or the Queen — and have the real business of the presidency conducted by… a City Manager-type, a Prime Minister, somebody who’s directly answerable to Congress, rather than a person who moves all his friends into the White House and does whatever he wants for four years. The whole framework of the presidency is getting out of hand. It’s come to the point where you almost can’t run unless you can cause people to salivate and whip each other with big sticks. You almost have to be a rock star to get the kind of fever you need to survive in American politics.

and for beta - We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world, a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we’ll kill you. Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid little rich kids like Donald Trump? They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us; they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them.

Unamuno, if my family's lives were in danger staying in one country damn straight I'd cross a border to save them. Legally or illegally, it's a human right to seek safety, and legally or illegally I'm willing to open my home to someone whose life in is danger.

A HUMAN right. Not only a right given to USians or Botswanians or Finlandians or Martians. A HUMAN right. There are no illegal humans. WTF do you not understand about this?!?!?

the criticism of Unamuno is a shining example of liberal hypocrisy...fuck you Unamuno, you're white, you did it the right way, you became an architect, you did it the right way, but because you're white it was easy for you.....and you wonder why there are 13 McVeighs fueling up a UHaul with fertilizer post election day - sorry Laurence Odonnell, you do not get the last word, the revolt will happen.  Yeah, most seriously disenfranchised white men will blow their brains out after they loose their job and drop off their kids at school.  My health insurance I pay 100% for will bill $1800 a month next year, I make too much for a handout - and you want me to pay taxes!  fuck you, get a job.  Mr. Odonnell, cool you had Mr. Moore on with a BBC News hat on doing a comedy stick in Clinton County Ohio.  Mr. Moore is a millionaire, by the way.

sorry, my bad, i just had to change the channel because some liberal couldn't make a good argument on why Trump's actions are opposite his words, you know with regard to hiring women and minorities and moving them to positions of power....see how dumb you people are who make moral life judgements based on abstract ideas such as words.

See the really good HST quote above, about rock stars.

since I'm missing TO's b-day in North Jersey, I will continue my Hunter S. Thompson quotes as I drink into the night....above I changed Clinton for Nixon and Trump for McGovern (Hunter would frown on that, I imagine, or not...who cares - fuck you )

That's very cute. No irony at all.

It's a human right that does not work perfectly well with other humans and their rights.

What we do in this case?

Where those human rights begin and where they end?

How do we decide that rights of certain people come above than other peoples?

What is the measure of state of unsafe that justifies committing a criminal act? (And yes Donna being illegal is a criminal act.)

JFC, Una, people *aren't* illegal, ever. Some people commit illegal acts, but no human being IS illegal. You're using biased and inaccurate Fox-news terminology. JFC.

Jerome, I said "open my home" which in the context of this discussion means opening our borders to people who need to come here. It's ALL of our home.  I've also housed *many* people - friends of friends, even some archinecters - who needed a place to crash over the years.

In addition, and in the context of this discussion, I've specifically worked with non-USian refugees in my community - people who already had a place to live - to help them get jobs and jobs training. Have you? Has anyone else here whining on about not wanting "illegals" to come here or not wanting to pay taxes to help "other" humans ever actually helped another human while expecting nothing in return?

I mean, jesus, again. Sorry to get so grumpy but I hear so many people here whining about stuff and they never, ever talk about work they are actively doing to address any problems beyond bitching about it on the internet. Let's have a sound-off: what non-profits do you volunteer your time for? Who are you mentoring? What are you doing to help less-fortunate kids at your own kids' school to achieve? How do you connect those in need with those who have extra in your neighborhood? Have you cleared the snow off an elderly neighbor's sidewalk, ever? Do you return your shopping cart to the corral when you're done?

I'm not talking about charitable giving, and definitely not at the church level - anyone can write a check, and yes many self-serving liberals don't do much more than that. I'm talking about spending your TIME and TALENTS doing things to make the world, in particular your local world, a better place.

I'm not trying to brag but I do a shit-ton of this kind of work - I can count 10 hours of it this week alone, and this has not been a particularly busy week. I do this work because my social-justice-Christian-upbringing, liberal education, and lived experience of 50 years tells me that this is what humans need to do.

Do you return your shopping cart to the corral when you're done?

I like to address this.  No I don't, not anymore.  I would have in the past, but then a very affluent roommate in college taught me about the economy.  See if you don't do that, you keep people employed.  One time I had my oldest who as 4 at the time with me and I sure as hell was not going to leave her alone anywhere so I just left the cart and some aggressive woman was yelling at me, I felt like she wanted my kid. (1 non-profit, trying to find funds to move it forward in Detroit, etc...other than that I just work).

ok back to HST
