The task of the conservation and regeneration design of the S.M.C Building intended to transform the remained structure of S.M.C Building through certain scale expansion into a new museum building in Shanghai.
The total area of the new museum should be around 30,000 square meters. Historic elements such as the Red Building in the courtyard, historic facades, and the circle square should be preserved.
The primary issue of the proposal is the relationship between the old building blocks and the new construction, which includes:
- Control the height of new construction
- Reuse the red building
- Rearrange the visit circulation
- Distinguish the new construction in elevation
Background Infomation of S.M.C
In 1854, British, American and French settlement in Shanghai coalesced into Shanghai International Settlement (French Concession quit in 1862).
In 1863, the International Settlement established Shanghai Municipal Council (S.M.C) to operate as an autonomous institution of the alien and the residents and played the role as a quasi-government in the daily management of the settlement.
