Berkeley Bay Trail Extension

Ware Associates provided architectural and structural engineering design services for the project that transformed the western edge of the Berkeley Marina area from a car-centric to pedestrian-centric urban area. In addition, the firm offered support services for the planning of a 1.5 mile extension of the Bay Trail. The project integrated a new master plan and environmental documentation for the extension, incorporating new and enhanced safety measures for pedestrian circulation at the Berkeley Pier, Southside Marina, and the connecting 110-ft span pedestrian bridge. Preserving the open vistas and iconic marina waterfront, Ware Associates carefully honored the natural elements of the bay marsh while creating a bicycle and pedestrian bridge for the City of Berkeley. The bridge has a pre-cast concrete deck, steel superstructure and pre-cast concrete piles driven 80 ft into the bay mud. In addition, Ware Associates utilized natural materials such as wooden handrails to visually engage the bridge with its surrounding habitat, and selected a slender and lightweight profile to minimize the visual and spatial impact of the structure.
